The town of Cicero is seeking feedback from residents and neighboring municipalities on the possibility of lowering the speed limits on East Taft Road and Route 31.
At the Jan. 8 Cicero Town Board meeting, Supervisor Bill Meyer said highway department plows have “had a number of near-misses” on Route 31. Meyer said he had a close call himself coming off Fergerson Road onto Route 31.
“It is not our road, but I’m going to have some conversations with our friends there [at the New York State Department of Public Transportation],” Meyer said. “I’m also seeking your input. If you have any thoughts on that area that need to be addressed that I can relay to the friends at the State of New York, please contact me and we’ll try to put them all together in one item.”
Meyer said there are similar traffic concerns on East Taft Road, which he has discussed with Cicero Police Chief Steve Rotunno.
East Taft Road is a county road. Highway Superintendent Chris Woznica said the town has the ability to change speed limits on county roads, but Meyer said he wants to discuss traffic issues with local leaders in the towns of DeWitt and Manlius because Taft Road traffic affects drivers and residents there.
“I’m just trying to be courteous with our neighbors in other municipalities on the south side, which might also be impacted,” Meyer said.

Also on the agenda
In addition to discussing traffic, the Cicero Town Board handled the following matters at its Jan. 8 meeting:
• American Legion anniversary: The board presented American Legion James Harvey Spire Post 787 with a proclamation celebrating the post’s 100th anniversary. Post 787 was formed Jan. 5, 1920, and named after a Mud Mill Road resident who was killed in the Battle of Duck Valley in France during World War I.
• Highway spending: The board approved $14,709.12 to Priority Connections for a garage door security system for the highway garage and $450,000 to purchase 9,000 tons of road salt.
• Public hearings: The board scheduled two public hearings on changes to the town code for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22. The first hearing concerns the removal of apartments as an authorized use in General Commercial zones, and the second is to add an ad hoc position to the Cicero Board of Ethics.
