A head-on car crash on Thompson Road in DeWitt last week left a teenage girl dead and one man taken to the hospital.
According to the DeWitt Police Department, the collision occurred at about 7:40 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, on Thompson Road near the intersection of Alden Avenue. Officers said a vehicle going north on Thompson Road crossed the center line, striking a vehicle coming from the opposite direction head-on. Both drivers had to be extricated by the DeWitt Fire Department.
The northbound driver, identified by police as Brianna Helm, 19, was taken to University Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, and the southbound vehicle’s driver, James Collins, 63, was taken to Crouse Hospital where he was treated for cuts and minor injuries.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
“At this point in the investigation, we are not able to conclude what caused the northbound vehicle to cross into the southbound lane,” Lieutenant Thomas A. Norton said in a statement.
