Each fall, the question around the Baldwinsville girls volleyball team is not about the victories, which accumulate with clockwork regularity, but whether anyone will pick a set off them in a particular best-of-five match. Fayetteville-Manlius, on its home court, tried to do so last Monday night, but never got close to the Bees, who were consistent and relentless in a 25-15, 25-14, 25-16 sweep over the Hornets. Hannah Klaben dished out 27 assists, an average of nine assists per set. Shayna Webber had a front-line presence with seven kills and five blocks, while Abby May also managed seven kills. Rachel Aiello (five kills) and Maddy Price (four kills) were close behind, as Price added three aces and five digs, and Michelle Voyer three kills. Defensively, Emily Pascale led with six digs. For the Bees, who had played the previous weekend in the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Tournament, the fun continued Friday night with a three-set sweep over Cicero-North Syracuse. A dominant effort in a 25-10 first set got it started, and B’ville won the next two sets 25-17 and 25-16. What’s more, the team’s rotation continued to solidify. Aiello had 10 kills, four digs and two aces, while May got nine kills and four aces and Webber stepped up for eight kills. Klaben fed all of them, thanks to her 30 assists, and Pascale earned 11 digs and Rebecca Lawrence added three kills. Also undefeated, Baldwinsville’s boys volleyball team began its week by casting aside the combined Syracuse city squad last Tuesday in a 25-9, 25-4, 25-13 sweep. Everyone on the roster saw some court time, including Pat Dubiel, who had 14 assists, and Dan Shorney, who finished with 11 assists. Up front, Ryan Gell led with eight kills, just ahead of Nick Walker, who got seven kills. Corey Toscano contributed four kills as Liam Wicks, Brian Rush and Cole Patnode earned two kills apiece. Then the Bees were off until Friday night, when it took on Jamesville-DeWitt and, in three steady, productive sets, got past the Red Rams 25-16, 25-17, 25-18. Gell led the front line, producing six kills. Jonathan Dunn, earning five kills, lagged close behind as Toscano contributed three kills. Dubiel finished with 23 assists, adding two aces and two digs, with Wicks helping out by getting five assists and three aces. This leads the boys Bees toward Tuesday’s match with C-NS and Thursday’s showdown with fellow unbeaten Oswego, while the B’ville girls will host its annual Fall Swing Tournament, bringing several other local sides to the Baker High School complex.
