Both of the Fayetteville-Manlius track and field teams got a real push from Central Square Wednesday afternoon, but still prevailed to move to 2-0 on the season.
In a tight boys meet, the Hornets held on for a 74-66 victory, while the F-M girls dominated on the oval to beat the Red Hawks 87-53.
For the girls, depth mattered as it took two of the three relays. Heather Martin, Courtney Chapman, Katie Sischo and Jillian Fanning sped through the 4×800 relay in nine minutes, 17 seconds, and Martin also helped Natalie Zazzara, Kelly Muller and Hannah Smith take the 4×400 relay in 4:23.
On her own, Martin tore through the 400-meter dash in 59.1 seconds despite the damp and chilly conditions. Zazzara took the 200-meter dash (27.8 seconds) as Molly Levy won the 100-meter dash in 13.6 seconds. Isabel Carapella managed two titles in the 100-meter hurdles (18.1 seconds) and 400-meter hurdles (1:15.2).
Elsewhere, Fanning was first in the 3,000-meter run in 10:37, with Sischo first in the 800-meter run (2:27) and Katie Brislin needing just 4:51 to cover 1,500 meters. Jhovelle Pommells threw the shot put 31 feet 1 inch and Kelly Muller had a top long jump of 13 feet 7 inches.
In the closer boys meet, F-M needed a relay sweep to get the winning margin. Andrew Veilleux, Andrew Roache, Mark McGurrrin and Eric Billinson started it when they ran the 4×800 in 9:39.
Following that, the quartet of Ryan Jones, Austin Perez, Tom Quinlan and Tanner Carter took first in the 4×100 (47.6 seconds), and in the 4×400 Perez, Veilleux and Roache joined Langston Whitecap for another victory in 3:39.8.
On his own, Perez was first in the 200 (23.1 seconds) as Jones sped through the 100 in 11.1 seconds and Whitecap prevailed in the 400 in 52.2 seconds. That helped negate Central Square’s total sweep of the field events.
As this went on, Christian Brothers Academy’s boys team swept past Westhill 87-53 and Skaneateles 81-60 to take an early lead in the OHSL Liberty division.
Brendan Smith stood out, winning the mile (4:52) and 800 (2:12) on his own and helping the Brothers take the 4×800 (9:20) and 4×400 (3:48) relays with help from Jack Brower, Tom Reith, Jared Sayles and Kevin Frasor.
Emmanuel Collins controlled the sprints, as he ran the 100 in 11.4 seconds and 200 in 23.4 seconds as Will Brower took the 400 hurdles in 1:06. Collins, Frasor, Deshawn Salter and Nate Fornal ran the 4×100 in 53.8 seconds.
In the girls meet, where CBA lost to Skaneateles 98-42 and Westhill 89-45, Ashley Crouch still won the 100 sprint (14.1 seconds) and 100 hurdles (18.4 seconds). Michaela Gildemeyer chimed in when she won the 800 in 2:31.7 as Crouch, Monica Perrone, Olivia Lore and Betty Etheredge took the 4×100 relay in 54.8 seconds. Etheredge, on her own, won the long jump, going 15 feet 6 inches.
