No matter what the circumstances or the opposition, any time a high school team finishes a regular season without a defeat on its ledger is still a special accomplishment.
So it was for the Baldwinsville boys soccer Bees, who faced 16 opponents this fall and only got equaled by one of them, Fayetteville-Manlius, in a weather-shortened 2-2 draw.
B’ville, sitting at no. 5 in the latest state Class AA rankings, did get a bit of a push in last Tuesday’s game at Henninger, waiting until after halftime to take charge in a 3-0 shutout of the Black Knights.
Henninger kept it 0-0 in the first 40 minutes and, more impressively, limited the Bees’ opportunities. Once the second half started, though, a few of those chances were converted.
Brennan Walsh and Griffin Seeber led the way, each notching a goal and an assist. Tyler Johnson scored, too, while goalkeeper Andrew Taylor got credit for an assist while also recording three saves.
B’ville finished up Thursday against Corcoran, and made it to 15-0-1 without any kind of stress, rolling to an 8-0 victory over the Cougars.
Here was another fine example of the Bees’ depth as 11 different players contributed to at least one scoring play, with Foertch, Malik Davis and Jacob Daly leading the charge as they each scored twice.
Single goals went to Johnson and Walsh, with Seeber earning a pair of assists. Riley Belknap, Jared Kantak, Brian Jung, Sungwon Choi and Chase Hornsey had one assist apiece.
Eight teams qualified for the Section III Class AA playoffs. As the top seed, B’ville hosts no. 8 seed Rome Free Academy Wednesday night in the quarterfinal round.
The winner here would get no. 4 seed West Genesee or no. 5 seed Cicero-North Syracuse in the Oct. 30 quarterfinals at Jamesville-DeWitt. The other quarterfinals pit no. 2 seed F-M against Liverpool and no. 3 seed Utica Proctor against Henninger.
