Each of the Baldwinsville indoor track and field teams would begin a busy 2017-18 campaign by appearing against a large field at last Saturday’s Ithaca College Bomber High School Invitational.
The girls Bees finished third with 40 points, just behind runner-up Sweet Home (45 points) as Rush-Henrietta won with 75 points. On the boys side, B’ville had 37 points to get fourth place behind Sweet Home, Rush-Henrietta and Schenectady.
Karen Ekure was victorious in the girls 300-meter dash, her time of 42.13 seconds nearly a full second ahead of Amsterdam’s Lauren Santiago (42.89) in the runner-up spot as Maria Henwood was eighth in 44.93 seconds. Ekure also gained fourth place in the 55-meter dash in 7.56 seconds.
Another win came in the weight throw, where B’ville’s Danielle Marsell had a top fling of 38 feet 1 ¼ inches, more than a foot ahead of Rush-Henrietta’s Lindsay Johnson (37’ ¼”) and the field.
Adrianna Straughter nearly won the girls 55-meter hurdles, qualifying for the final in 9.09 seconds and improving to 9.02 seconds in that title race, second to Amsterdam’s Gabby Stanavich, who set a meet record with 8.54 seconds.
Anna Demer needed 1:44.98 to grab third place in the 600-meter run, not far from the winning 1:43.34 posted by Elmira’s Aleziah Brooks. Straughter cleared 5 feet in the high jump and landed in fifth place as Anna Miller was seventh (30’6”) in the shot put.
B’ville also was seventh in the 4×800 relay in 10:55.16 and ninth in the 4×400 (4:40.41) as Olivia Creelman won her heat in the 3,000-meter run and was 14th overall. Maya Hewitt was eighth in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet.
The B’ville boys featured Kieran Sheridan, whose time of 1:24.95 in the 600-meter run put him in second place behind Edison’s Jaquil Baxter, who won in 1:24.38.
Adam Davis got to third place in the 1,000-meter run in 2:40.61, while Greg Porceng made it to third place in the 300 in 36.95 seconds, just ahead of Pete Fiorini (37.22 seconds) in sixth place.
Judson Fletcher, throwing the shot put 45’6 ¼”, gained third place, while also taking 11th place in the weight throw. Jaeho Lee cleared 11 feet in the pole vault and got sixth place.
Porceng, Sheridan, Cole Peters and Zion Hayes were sixth in the 4×200 relay in 1:37.75. Joe Licameli made it to eighth place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:23.08 as the Bees got 10th place in the 4×800.
