The nominations have been made, the candidates are set and the town of Cazenovia will have a contested election for town board seats this November.
Up for election this year is the town supervisor’s position — which is an uncontested race — and two seats on the town board, for which three candidates are running: two Democrats and one Republican.
At their caucus on Sept. 9, Cazenovia Democrats nominated Bill Zupan to run for re-election as town supervisor, and incumbent Councilor Liz Moran and newcomer Jimmy Golub to run for town board. All three also will be on the Strong Community Party line.
On the Republican side, Councilor Thomas M. Driscoll is seeking reelection to the seat he has held for nearly two years. Driscoll will be on the Republican Party line through the petition process; Republicans do not caucus or primary for local elections. He will also be on the Reform Party line.
Zupan has served on the town board since 2008 and as supervisor since 2014. He also served for many years on the town zoning board of appeals, which he chaired for six years. Zupan grew up in Cazenovia, graduated from Hobart College and is a long-time local business owner.
Moran was elected town supervisor in 2005 and served for four years. She has been a member of the town board since 2014. A 31-year resident of Cazenovia, she has a Ph.D. from Cornell and owns Eco-Logic, an environmental consulting firm in Cazenovia.
Golub grew up downstate and received a degree in agriculture from the University of Vermont. He spent 32 years working for Genex Cooperative, which provides artificial insemination services for dairy cattle. In 1982, Golub and his wife Janine purchased “Our Farm” on Peth Road in Manlius, where they grow and sell sweet corn, strawberries and pumpkins.
Driscoll was appointed to the town board in January 2014 to fill the seat left vacant by Zupan when he became supervisor. Driscoll then won a special election in November 2014 to remain in his town board seat for one year, until the November 2015 election. Driscoll is a past village trustee, village planning board member and town zoning board of appeals member. He has a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College and a master’s degree in administration from Russell Sage College. He currently works as an account manager for Norampac Corporation, a division of Cascades.
Profiles of all four candidates will be published in a future issue of the Cazenovia Republican.
