Welcome to everyone’s least favorite part of CNY weather: the muddy thaw. Spring is on its way, but it’s still too early to garden and getting a bit hard to ski. While you’re waiting for the weather to make up its mind, it never hurts to visit the library. Find great resources to plan your garden, figure out how to get your employment back on track, learn some new skills or just pick up some books or movies to while away the hours.
Help in taxing times
Our friends from the AARP are back to help seniors and low-income residents with their taxes. Call the library at 635-5631 to set up an appointment.
EBook basics
EBooks are great. Bookworms can now travel without carrying that extra satchel full of paperbacks and Baby Boomers can change the type size with the swipe of a finger. Unfortunately, like laptops, cell phones and DVRs, they also come with a learning curve. Let us help you figure out which reader is for you and how to tap the library’s collection to fill it up at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 23. Class size is limited and registration is required. Call 635-5631 to sign up.
In Stitches
I’ve run out of sewing puns, but this group never runs out of interesting projects. In Stitches ties up the month at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 with a traditional sewing circle setup for folks to socialize over a variety of hand needle arts. New members are welcome.
Unemployment Q & A
Our speaker will help you untangle the mysteries of unemployment compensation with a special Q and A session at 1 p.m. Feb. 24.
Cookie time
Milk & Cookies visits the library this winter break to provide music, stories, and interactive fun at 2 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 23. We’ll provide the cookies! This lively duo is recommended for children over 2 years old. No registration is required, but seating is limited so try to arrive before 2 p.m.
Just despicable
Even if you’ve seen it before, our free vacation movie is great to share with friends. Join us at 2 p.m. Thursday Feb. 24 for Despicable Me. Refreshments will be served.
Crafty business
Concert tickets? Dried flowers? Don’t scrap them, scrapbook them! Relive great memories as you chronicle significant events at this month’s Scrapbooking session at 7 p.m. Thursday Feb. 24. Registration and a $15 materials fee are required. Last, but never least, clean up the debris of a busy week with a freshly crafted wastebasket. You can craft your own with the assistance of Sandee of Cherished Baskets at 10 a.m. Feb. 26. Registration and a $20 supply fee required.
Online history
Scanners, databases, historians and dedicated volunteers are making local history more computer friendly than ever. Join us at 1:30 p.m. Friday Feb. 25 to learn more about discovering these treasures.
Teens + Food + Friday = Fun
Join us Friday Feb. 25 to meet up with friends and plan your stunning return from vacation. Bring us your favorite YouTube clip, web link, smart phone app or vacation souvenir to show and tell. There will be prizes for the session favorites.
Ready, set, write or draw or?
Zines were doing mashups long before the Internet age and now they are migrating onto the web. Interested in making your mark, but tired of being a solo act? Find collaborators, critics, friends and food at our third edition of Teen Zine, an eight-week arts workshop culminating in an online Zine and possible coffee shop performance. Mix, mash and comment on the art of others or create your own. The fun begins Monday Feb. 28 and runs through April 18. Young adults from eighth grade on are invited to join us as we continue the tradition of snacks, art and fellowship for another year.
Val Chism is the young adult librarian at the Baldwinsville Public Library.
