Confronting each other for the first time this winter, the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill and Oneida boys volleyball teams had a spirited battle — but the Red Devils prevailed in four games. The Indians actually struck first, winning the opener 25-18. From that point forward, though, the Red Devils took charge, rolling through the second game 25-12 to draw even, then claiming the next two games 25-14 and 25-20. Rob Sweet pounded out 16 kills to lead the VVS winning effort. Tyler Curtis and Drew Foster each had five kills and combined for nine blocks. Luke Voelker fed them with 19 assists. On the other end, Oneida saw Mike Rabbitt earn 17 kills, David Watson 12 kills and Aaron Meyers eight kills. Neil Parry had 32 assists. A night earlier, VVS had swept Ilion 25-10, 25-21, 25-14, getting 10 assists from Voelker and five assists from Stephen Davis. Aaron Owens had four kills, while Kevin Sayles and Nick Altmann joined Curtis with three kills,. Oneida proved successful in last Tuesday’s match at Chittenango, battling through three tough games to sweep the Bears 25-18, 25-23, 25-23. Parry, with his 30 assists, set up a balanced front line where Rabbit picked up 14 kills and Watson added 11 kills. As this was going on, VVS was meeting Living Word Academy, splitting the first two games before the Lions took over in the late going to beat the Red Devils 25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 25-8. Curtis and Sweet each had five kills, while Altmann added three kills. Voelker had 13 assists. Living Word setter Eathan Irish had 39 assists as Dave Masser (16 kills), Deng Guy (12 kills) and Isaac Virag (11 kills) worked on the front line.
