CAZENOVIA — The Cazenovia Lions Club recently announced the return of its annual Independence Day fireworks.
The fireworks will be launched at Gypsy Bay at dusk, around 9 p.m., on July 4. The rain date is July 5.
The event was canceled last year due to COVID-19, and according to fireworks co-chair Scott Dauenhauer, the Lions Club was unsure whether the show could be held this year until a couple weeks ago.
Dauenhauer, along with fellow Lions Club members Nick Kagey and George Williams, worked closely with village and town officials, the Cazenovia Police Department, and NYS Parks to prepare for the July 4 event and raise funds.
The group set a contingency date of Labor Day to allow additional time for COVID-19 restrictions to be lifted.
“We are so excited that everything came together for us to hold the event on the July 4,” said Dauenhauer. “The fireworks are a great sign of a return to normalcy in Cazenovia and planning was truly a team effort on the part of our local officials, NYS, police, and first responders.”
The Lions Club anticipates large crowds at the event. To help create a “safe, respectful and family-friendly environment” in the village this Fourth of July weekend, the club is encouraging attendees to voluntarily maintain distance between different parties. Unvaccinated individuals are asked to socially distance (six feet) and wear a mask when distance cannot be maintained.
To avoid overcrowding at viewing locations, the Lions Club is also asking people to consider using their own spaces to view the fireworks or to spread out to other locations outside the center of town, like Lakeside Park.
The Cazenovia Lions Club is part of Lions International, the largest service organization in the world. Locally, the club is actively involved in the community, providing free vision screening and eyeglasses for children, sponsoring the student of the month program, funding high school scholarships through the Duck Race and laptop raffles, providing the annual Easter Egg hunt, organizing the Ride for Sight, and helping other local causes, such as Camp Lookout, CazCares, and the Christmas Walk.
