BALDWINSVILLE — The Timber Banks Golf Club & Marina located along the banks of the scenic Seneca River is now offering “Jazz at Timber Banks” on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m., in its brand-new Persimmons Restaurant, at 3536 Timber Banks Parkway in Baldwinsville.
The 21-concert lineup showcases some of the finest local performers of jazz, blues, funk, R&B, Americana, country swing, Latin crossover, contemporary pop and Sinatra on a schedule that runs well into 2023. The series is presented by CNY Jazz Central.
The music starts Nov. 30 with Grupo Pagan Lite, followed by singer Scott Dennis on Dec. 7.
Eight years ago, Dennis wisely hired three of Syracuse best jazzmen – keyboardist Dave Solazzo, bassist Mike Solazzo and drummer Jimmy Johns – to record a 10-tune debut disc called “Close Your Eyes.”
On the disc, Scott’s rich baritone does jubilant justice to chestnuts like Arlen and Mercer’s “That Old Black Magic” and Cole Porter’s “Just One of Those Things.”
Although it’s Scott’s singing that’s most in focus on the record, as it should be, he demonstrates a flair for improvising along with his sidemen as with their fascinating version of Kern and Mercer’s “I’m Old Fashioned,” intriguingly embellished with Caribbean rhythms and kickin’ keys.
Scott’s disc was produced by Nancy Kelly at Syracuse’s SubCat Studio, and was released in 2014.
Scott often sings with the Rhythm-Airs big band from 7 to 9 p.m. most Wednesdays at the Camillus Elks Club.
“Jazz at Timber Banks” continues Dec. 14 with songstress Joanna Jewett, Jan. 11 with be-bopper Ronnie Leigh, Jan. 18 with keyboardist Alex Becerra, and vivacious vocalist Vanessa Vacanti & The Jazz Mafia on Jan. 25; cnyjazz.org/jazz-at-timber-banks; 315-635-8800.
On its website, timberbanks.com, Timber Banks Golf Club is described as “a stylish, modern alternative to the traditional golf country club. Featuring a Jack Nicklaus Design course, Timber Banks Golf Club & Marina appeals to the young at heart looking for a social center to reconnect with friends and family.”
