According to the National Christmas Tree Association, there are more than 4,000 local Christmas tree recycling programs throughout the United States. Onondaga County is home to many such programs, and now is the time to get rid of your tree and give it new life by turning it into mulch.
Most municipalities, including the City of Syracuse, have a pick-up or drop-off program for Christmas trees. Residents should contact their local municipality for specific information on their program.
Although OCRRA does not accept trees in the blue bin, both the Amboy and Jamesville Compost Sites are open select hours, Jan. 4 through 16 for tree drop off. Both sites will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays and closed Sundays during that time.
There is no charge to use either of the OCRRA compost sites during January. Simply stop by during designated hours and follow these rules for tree preparation: Remove all decorations, lights, tinsel, tree stands and plastic bags.
