Boys lacrosse Wildcats, Lakers earn big victories

West Genesee tops Penfield, Fairport; Marcellus, Westhill also win

Only in extreme cases of weather – usually thunderstorms – do area boys lacrosse teams get driven off the field.

Yet last Tuesday’s heavy snows meant that no one played, even with all-weather turf fields since the snow had to get cleared off them before games could resume.

West Genesee continued to roll, with the Wildcats starting and finishing on a tear to beat Section V’s Penfield 12-9.

By jumping out 4-0 in the first quarter, WG was able to endure a mid-game stretch where the Patriots found gaps in the defense and made up all of the ground to tie it, 9-9, going to the final period.

Put to a stress test for the first time this spring, the Wildcats passed it, grabbing face-offs and patiently working its way toward a quartet of decisive goals.

Nash Oudemool’s four goals led the way for the attack, with Chace Cogan, Jake McMahon and Jack Wenham netting two goals apiece. Penfield held Charlie Lockwood to a single goal which Jacob Pensabene matched as Jonah Vormwald and Jeff Mercer both picked up assists.

WG had a far easier time of it Saturday pounding another Section V opponent, nearly blanking Fairport in a 14-1 game where Wenham had, by far, the best performance of his career.
Constantly getting open off feeds from Lockwood, Wenham didn’t let up until he had seven goals, Lockwood gaining six assists and Pensabene four assists. Cogan earned three goals and Oudemool converted twice.

In its only game last week, Marcellus steamed past Cortland 16-2, ending things early with a 12-goal first-quarter outburst which necessitated a running clock most of the rest of the way.

Chris Doshna and Connor Ciota led with three goals apiece, Doshna adding a pair of assists. Damyn LeClair and Nick Rayfield both got two goals and two assists, with Jimmy Cox and Cam Stojkovski both earning one goal and two assists. Donavan Fraher and Hollis Child had the other goals.

Even more impressive, though, was seeing Skaneateles rebound from an 0-2 start and, hosting Christian Brothers Academy at Hyatt Stadium, mostly riding the work of Charlie Carbonaro and Luke Mizro to an 11-9 victory over the Brothers.

At first the Lakers broke out of a 2-2 tie with a quick end to the first half and led 6-3 at the break. When CBA rallied and tied it, 8-8, Skaneateles absorbed it and, in the final period, held the visitors to a single goal while moving back in front to stay.

Carbonaro was productive all night, scoring five times, while Mizro tacked on four goals. Landen Brunelle had two assists as Tye Kennedy and Ty Calabro also scored and Luke Logan recorded 12 saves.

Meanwhile, Jordan-Elbridge took a 1-2 record into its game against Chittenango and shut out the Bears in the first half, building a 9-0 edge by halftime and eventually prevailing 14-3.

Westhill had struggled out of the gate, beaten again last Thursday by Homer in a 15-6 decision which was the Warriors’ first loss to the Trojans in seven years.

Homer, who takes on Marcellus Monday, dominated the second half 7-1 with Alex Votra getting four goals as Dan Stiles and Cooper Swartz both scored three times and combined for six assists.

Most of Westhill’s production came early as Andrew Mondo netted three goals and added an assist. Trevor Young got two goals and an assist as Conor Rose also converted.

The skid ended Saturday as Westhill topped General Brown 10-5. Three different players – Mondo, Jack Hayes and Brendan Gilhooley – earned three goals apiece, Hayes joining Young with two assists, Grady Etoll a goal and Teddy DeMore an assist.
