CENTRAL NEW YORK – Whether it was Reed Danforth at Skaneateles or Nolan Brunelle at Jordan-Elbridge, area high school boys basketball fans have lots of chances to catch two of the most potent offensive threats in all of Section III.
Of course, the Lakers might be pretty strong as a team, too, if last Tuesday night’s 75-29 destruction of Homer in its 2024-25 season opener was any indication.
Having gone 14-8 in 2023-24 with a sectional Class B quarterfinal defeat to Holland Patent, Skaneateles expected at least this much again with Danforth, who averaged nearly 21 points per game last winter.
Right from the outset Homer was put away, the margin growing to 37-12 by halftime and Danforth ultimately producing 22 points and five rebounds before resting in the game’s latter stages
Nine different Skaneateles players got on the scoresheet, with Finlay Coyne (14 points) and Joe Delmonico (10 points) joining Danforth in double figures. Shea Musso had eight points and Jack Peenstra amassed 14 rebounds to go with his seven points.
Skaneateles was scheduled to play three times in the first full week of December, but weather interrupted a game Thursday with PSLA Fowler until the following week and another game with General Brown that got moved to Dec. 23.
J-E got underway last Monday against Onondaga and the Eagles, 10-12 a season ago, roared out of the gate against the Tigers, winning by a 73-44 margin.
Returning for his junior season Nolan Brunelle (who averaged 21 points per game last winter) had 25 points but was outdone by brother Chase Brunelle, a freshman who sank six 3-pointers to account for most of his 27 points.
Together the Brunelle Brothers along with Austin Murray (who had 15 points) helped J-E jump all over OCS, eventually building an 18-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and pulling further away from there.
