SKANEATELES – Accomplishments are great, but when something is left undone it can lead to more, at least for those who are motivated.
Such is the Skaneateles girls ice hockey team, who reclaimed the Section III championship last winter only to get stopped by eventual champion Adirondack United in the state semifinals in Utica.
With the state “Frozen Four” held again at the Nexus Center Feb. 21 and 22, the Lakers return most of its lineup and seem determined to add another state title to the one it earned back in 2022.
The first step, taken last Wednesday when Skaneateles faced Webster Thomas at Allyn Arena, amounted to a showcase for a potent Lakers attack which nearly got to double digits while recording a 9-1 victory.
Grabbing a 4-1 lead in the opening period, Skaneateles pulled further away led by Cora Major, who not only notched a three-goal hat trick but added a pair of assists, and Grace Marquardt, who scored twice and got three assists.
Evelyn McNally also earned two goals, with Layla Smart getting a goal and two assists. Lily Kennedy had the other goal as Laura Davis, Makayla Barron and Genevieve Smart had two assists apiece. Assists also went to Teagan Hogan and Kendra Garlock.
Skaneateles opens its Section III portion of the schedule Tuesday hosting Oswego, then play its first road game of the season Dec. 10 at Ithaca.
