MOUNT MARKHAM – As it seems to do each year, Baldwinsville’s cross country program will have a presence at next weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet.
This is due to the work of junior Kamryn Barton, who earned her spot Saturday by getting to fourth place in the Section III Class A championship race on a chilly, sunny morning at Mount Markham High School.
Barton made her way into contention and, in 18 minutes 10.9 seconds just beat out Auburn’s Mary Alice Pineau (18:12.5) for that fourth spot, not far from the winning 17:38.2 from Pineau’s Maroons teammate, Kyleen Brady.
Section III’s All-Star squad for the state meet at Queensbury this Saturday will feature Barton, Pineau, Brady and two runners from Fayetteville-Manlius, Izzy Sullivan (a past state champion) and Jordan Giannetti.
Team-wise, B’ville was fifth with 99 points, part of an exceptional race where Liverpool edged Auburn by a single point, 49-50, for the top spot, with F-M third and Cicero-North Syracuse fourth.
Madelyn Donhauser had the best finish outside of Barton, the freshman going 19:26.3 for 20th place overall and 19th in the team standings, one spot ahead of sophomore Ella DeFio, who posted 19:26.9.
Yolanda Wei also broke the 20-minute mark, going 19:59.6 for 27th place in the team event, while Rachel Becker finished in 20:13.7 ahead of Veda Steinemann (20:27.9), Mariah LeGrow (20:42.0), Isabella Arria (20:42.4), Makayla Fowler (21:16.2) and Mia Bush (21:30.2).
Closing its season with some of its best form, the Baldwinsville boys team rose to a third-place finish in its portion of the sectional Class A meet.
The Bees’ total of 92 points beat C-NS (109), whom it lost to in the regular season, the Northstars settling for fifth place as Auburn rolled to the team title with 33 points and Liverpool was second with 85.
In an individual race where Auburn claimed the top three spots led by Ryan Maher’s winning 15:34.3, no Bees runner cracked the top 10, but sophomore Liam McOmber and senior Jacob Guelli came close.
McOmber posted 16:34.1, just beating out Guelli (16:34.2) by one-tenth of a second at the finish line as McOmber finished 12th and Guelli settled into 13th place.
Senior Angelo Sawyers made his way to 18th place in 17:02.8, while senior Wyatt Decker went 17:16.8 for 24th place. Freshman Dominic Dottolo, 29th in 17:23.7, rounded out the scoring column four spots ahead of London Premo’s 17:25 flat. Logan Bolton finished in 17:26.7, less than a second ahead of Ben Forman’s 17:27.4, with Ethan Millard going 18:04.1.
