UTICA – Mia Arvidson led the way for the Jamesville-DeWitt/Fayetteville-Manlius gymnastics team as it tied for second overall in Friday’s Section III championships.
Held again at Valley Gymnastics in Utica, the sectional meet saw J-D/F-M land on 137.3 points, exactly matching the total of Whitesboro but trailing the 146.95 of New Hartford, who won its 12th consecutive sectional team title. East Syracuse Minoa/Liverpool finished sixth with 115.875 points.
With scores of 9.35 on the vault, 9.30 on balance beam and a 9.05 floor exercise routine, Arvidson qualified on each apparatus for March’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships, which will take place at suburban Buffalo’s Clarence High School.
J-D/F-M’s Ailey Babakian is also headed for the state meet on the beam thanks to a 9.05 routine, which tied her for sixth place as she also scored 9.0 on uneven bars to finish fifth.
Arvidson was fourth on the beam to go with a third on the vault and fifth on the floor leading to an all-around score of 36.05, her best total of the season.
Four gymnasts beat that all-around total led by New Hartford teammates Grayson Gall (37.95) and Julia Makuszak (37.70) as Gall prevailed on the beam (9.75) and uneven bars (9.6), Makuszak took the vault with 9.5 and the Spartans’ Madison Scranton was victorious on the floor with a 9.625 routine.
