CENTRAL NEW YORK – The Fayetteville-Manlius boys soccer team had moved up to no. 4 in Class AAA, but then were dealt a setback last Tuesday night when it lost a 1-0 decision to Cicero-North Syracuse.
Once 0-5-1, the Northstars had won four in a row going into this game and clamped down on defense against a Hornets side that controlled most of the game. That work was rewarded in the second half when Dante Melfi netted the game’s only goal, assisted by Ryan Frisch.
Meanwhile, Manlius Pebble Hill registered its best win of the season last Tuesday afternoon, not just defeating state Class C no. 3-ranked Tully but doing so by a decisive 3-0 margin.
Tully came into the game 10-1, but it was the 5-4-2 Trojans which were able to get out in front in the first half, then pull away late while seeing goalie Owen Hay turn back all nine of the Black Knights’ shots.
Nick Lurvey led the attack, twice earning goals. Andy Lurvey also converted, with Sam Lurvey picking up a pair of assists and Brody Cook earning an assist, too.
Now MPH looked for another big home win Thursday against Fabius-Pompey, and the momentum built up against Tully carried over in a big way as the Trojans put away the Falcons 4-1.
The duo of Nick and Andy Lurvey proved too difficult for F-P’s defense to handle, pushing the Trojans to a 2-0 halftime lead and then doubling that advantage late as Nick scored twice and assisted on both of Andy’s goals, Cook also getting an assist and Liam Allen, in goal, recording eight saves.
Christian Brothers Academy completed a stretch of four games in six days on Oct. 6 against its Albany CBA counterparts and, with a big late-game comeback, emerged from it with a 3-3 draw.
Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Brothers stormed back in it led by Amari Laub, who scored twice, and Zach Walma, who got two assists. Peyton Christ added a goal and Levi Maidment had an assist and goalie Matthias Freeman had 10 saves.
All of this may have worn on CBA, who then lost Friday to Marcellus 2-1 in overtime as it could not convert after Walma’s first-half goal assisted by Jaden Bowen-Henry. Rocco Grotto finished with nine saves.
Bishop Grimes started its week with a 1-0 defeat to Solvay, then surrendered six goals in the first half of a 7-0 loss to Faith Heritage a day later as Henry Jackson led the Saints with two goals and one assist.
Far tougher was Thursday afternoon’s 6-0 defeat to Mater Dei Academy, who took a 5-0 advantage by halftime led by Adam Edwards, who finished with a three-goal hat trick.
Still, Grimes broke the skid Saturday beating Syracuse Academy of Science 2-1 in overtime, blanking the Atoms after the first half and using goals by Christian Aiello and Eddie Koroma to win it as Cooper Boots added an assist.
