ONONDAGA COUNTY – With three weeks left in the season the Baldwinsville gymnastics team started its most important stretch with two meets against local opponents four days apart.
The Bees first encountered Jamesville-DeWitt/Fayetteville-Manlius last Wednesday night, and thanks to the likes of Miley Basilio and Ava Wazen nearly equaled the opposition in a 135.1-129.4 defeat.
Basilio was a close second on both the uneven bars and vault, going 8.6 on the bars and 8.2 on the vault to just trail F-M/J-D’s Mia Arvidson, who had 8.7 on the bars and 8.3 on the vault.
Ava Wazen got 8.1 on the vault for third but did even better on balance beam with an 8.8 routine, while Basilio gained third place on floor exercise with 8.4.
Then B’ville faced East Syracuse Minoa/Liverpool on Saturday night, and Basilio put together her best performance of the season leading the Bees to a 136.15-125.85 victory.
Scoring 9.3 on the floor, 9.2 on uneven bars and 9.1 on the beam, Basilio won all those events outright and shared first place on the vault with ESM/Liverpool’s Madeline Marquart with 8.4 to finish with an all-around total of 36.0.
Wazen stood out, too, her 34.1 all-around featuring a 9.0 beam routine and 8.7 on the floor. She also shared second place on the uneven bars with Haylee Robinson, both scoring 8.2. Cassie Fletcher scored 8.8 on the floor and Lauren Wallen got 8.3 on the vault.
Tuesday’s meet against Rome Free Academy would conclude the regular season, a week before the Section III championships at Valley Gymnastics.
