ONONDAGA COUNTY – By a small margin, the Jamesville-DeWitt/Christian Brothers Academy boys swim saw a two-season unbeaten streak halted by Baldwinsville on Tuesday night, but recovered two nights later to get a tough 95-90 victory over Fayetteville-Manlius.
The B’ville meet, decided by a 49-45 margin, included several superb performances, including one by the Red Rams’ Misha Kabunov, who in the course of winning two individual races set two Baker High Schoool pool records.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Kabunov won in one minute, 44.20 seconds, easily shattering the 1:47.60 state qualifying standard and setting a pool record. Then, in the 500 freestyle, when 4:52.52 was needed, Kabunov’s quick 4:44.17 blew past it by more than eight seconds and set another pool mark as teammate Blaise Zens was second in both events.
The Rams started well as Kyler Huyck, Matt Capella, Daniel Luo and Matt Trivelpiece went 1:54.72 in the 200-yard medley relay to easily top the Bees’ 1:58.23, but B’ville would take the other two relays plus sweep the individual races outside of Misha Kabunov.
For his part, Lesha Kabunov’s 2:03.96 in the 200 individual medley was quick, but second to the poll-record 1:58.97 from the Bees’ Lucas Clay. And in the 100 butterfly, Kabunov tore to a time of 55.22 seconds, but B’ville’s Matt Lange won in 54.96.
Huyck was second (1:02.26) and Jamey Turo third (1:02.33) in the 100 backstroke, with Luo second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.62 to Clay’s state-qualifying and pool-record 58.20 seconds.
The closing 400 freestyle relay decided the meet. Huyck, Zens and the Kabunovs finished in 3:27.32, but the Bees had Clay, Lange, Alex Nicita (who won both the 50 and 100 freestyle) and Mason Stever prevail in 3:20.74 and take third, too, in 3:47.53 to secure the clinching points.
With almost no turnaround, J-D/CBA had to take on F-M in another meet that proved close and exciting, not decided until Zens, Britz and the Kabunov brothers went 3:31.17 to dominate the closing 400 freestyle relay.
Before that, Misha Kabunov swam the 100 freestyle in 49.29 seconds to pull away from the Hornets’ Eli Kligerman (53.23), while also taking the 200 IM in 2:04.95.
Lesha Kabunov also prevailed twice, going 1:53.14 to beat Kligerman’s 1:57.12 in the 200 freestyle and, in the 100 butterfly, posting 57.40 seconds to the 58.62 from F-M’s Max Vudakovic.
Britz, Capella and the Kabunovs were first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:36.30 to the 1:38.55 from Vidakovic, Kligerman, Ben Matthews and Jack Prendergast, with Zens taking the 500 freestyle in 5:26.59 ahead of Matthews’ 5:32.75. Cameron Corona was first place in diving with 238.05 points.
F-M was victorious in the opening 200 medley relay, with Vidakovic, Prendergast, Anthony Bottar and James Cao finishing in 1:48.49 to top J-D/CBA’s 1:52.38.
Cao won on his own, too, swimming the 50 freestyle in 24.28 seconds as Britz was second in 25.00 and Jamey Turo third in 25.22 before Cao went 1:00.15 to edge Huyck (1:00.80) in the 100 backstroke. Bottar won a tight 100 breaststroke 1:07.82 to Luo’s 1:08.91.
