CENTRAL NEW YORK – Just as the calendar turned to December, a trio of area high school wrestling teams would make their way to the mat to begin their respective 2023-24 seasons.
Jamesville-DeWitt/Christian Brothers Academy met Syracuse City and ended up claiming all but two of the bouts on the card on the way to a 64-9 victory.
Five of those bouts were forfeited, but of those that were contested, Hayden Fleet had the quickest of them at 285 pounds, taking just 39 seconds to pin Bradford Dailey.
In 94 seconds, Bryce Dadey (215 pounds) pinned Daron Torrence, with Max Griffin (131 pounds) and Kai Vien (138 pounds) getting second-period falls. Michael Darling (170 pounds) pinned Jeff Petties in the third period as Carlos Barroso (124 pounds) went all six minutes to top Donate Smith 11-2.
From here, J-D/CBA went to the Morrisville-Eaton Duals on Saturday and, among other matches, edged host M-E 39-36 while also defeating Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 47-26.
Against M-E, quick pins by Mason Porter (152 pounds) in 17 seconds and Logan Oppedisano (160 pounds) in 21 seconds began the match, with Dadey and Hayden Fleet (285 pounds) also getting pins.
Griffin, at 124 pounds, and Akisha Nunnally (108 pounds) also had pins, but it took Barroso edging Devin Peck 11-9 for J-D/CBA to hang on. Against VVS, the Rams had six pins, getting them from Fleet, Dadey, Nunnally, Barroso, Matt Fallon (138) and John Lemondes at 145 pounds.
Fayetteville-Manlius waited until Saturday’s Andersen Tournament at Cicero-North Syracuse, but immediately made an impact, earning 154.5 points to finish third in a 23-team field behind the host Northstars and Fairport, who won with 183 points.
Jackson Schwab paced the Hornets, claiming the 285-pound title as he pinned Cameron Mosher (Honeoye Falls-Lima) in 64 seconds in the semifnals and then got a first-period fall over Homer’s Jack Brown in the championship round.
Andrew Dabulewicz finished fourth at 285, with Luis Rivera fourth at 138. Eric Kozlowski (131) and Trent Gloo (145) each had fifth-place efforts.
Contrasting this was East Syracuse Minoa running into Central Square last Wednesday and not getting on the board in a 71-0 defeat to the Redhawks.
Peyton Spencer, at 124 pounds, almost broke up the shutout early in the match, only to fall 4-3 to Jaxon Perkins as, at 170 pounds, Charles English had a close call of his own but lost to Mason Waldron 8-6.
