SYRACUSE – Strong in every single discipline, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls indoor track and field team opened its 2023-24 season by roaring to a lopsided victory in Thursday’s second session of the Jack Morse Kickoff Meet at SRC Arena.
The Northstars finished with 154 points, well clear of runner-up Cazenovia’s 89, while Liverpool finished fourth with 64 points.
Jaydin Mackey was first in the 55-meter dash in 7.37 seconds and then completed her sprint sweep by taking the 300-meter dash in 42.62, more than two seconds ahead of the field as Grace Murray was third in 45.15.
Kennedy Jones beat the field in the 3,000-meter run, her 11:08.75 edging the 11:09.19 from Liverpool’s Kaitlyn Hotaling and 11:26.80 from Charlotte Warner in third place.
Sophia Graham joined in by winning the 1,000-meter run in 3:09.25, with Katy Harbold third in 3:12.80 and Madeline Frisch sixth. Then, in the 1,500-meter run, C-NS went 1-2, Cameron Sisk winning in 5:18.97 and Allison Moran second in 5:36.53.
In the 4×800 relay, Graham, Harbold, Grace Scoville and Julia Scoville prevailed in 10:28.07, with Liverpool in fifth place, while Morgan Hayes claimed the long jump, going 16 feet 8 ¾ inches. Anna Eells cleared 5’3” in the high jump to get second place to the 5’4” from Nottingham’s Minayah Robinson.
Hayes got second in the 55 hurdles in 9.04 second as Aaliyah McDonald was third in 9.15. The Northstars also finished second in the 4×400 relay in 4:23.46 as Camryn Jacob was third in the 600-meter run in 1:50.44 and Maria Sanfilippo was fifth in the weight throw with 32’9 1/4”. Jasmine Ayre took fifth in the triple jump with 33’2 3/4”.
Winning on the track in the 4×200 relay, Liverpool had Mikayla Greene, Maddie Devendorf, Caitlyn Guilfoil and Lamyya Hudson go 1:54 flat to beat the 1:54.89 from C-NS. Devendorf added a sixth-place finish in the triple jump.
Layla Pearl Collins cleared 8 feet in the pole vault, second to the 8’6” from Cazenovia’s Susie Pittman as Collins added a sixth in the 55 hurdles.
Hudson went 45.68 seconds in the 300 for fourth place. Greene got fifth place in the 55 sprint, with Maggie Sherlock fifth in the 1,500. Ariyah Raccetti got sixth in the weight throw.
In the boys edition of the Morse meet, C-NS had 82.2 points, second only to the 96 from Cazenovia, with Liverpool’s 47 points putting them in a tie for fifth.
Camron Ingram led the Northstars, going 7.48 seconds to win the 55 hurdles and beating out teammate Kavon Brunson (8.21) in third place, Ingram also recording a third-place long jump of 19’4 3/4”.
Dante Melfi, Landen Empey, Sean Bombard and Dan Henry were second (3:47.21) to Cazenovia (3:46.36) in the 4×400, with Melfi, Tyler Graham, Joe Massett and Dominic Petrera second in the 4×800 in 8:55.36. Henry, in the pole vault, cleared 11’6”, second to the 12’9” from Altmar-Parish-Williamstown’s Ben VanVraken.
Joe Main, throwing the shot put 42’2 1/2”, got second place, adding a sixth (34’5 1/4”) in the weight throw. Gavin Goettel was fifth and Matt Jordan sixth in the high jump, Goettel clearing 5’6”. Matt Freeman had a fifth-place triple jump of 37’11 1/2”.
Liverpool got a second from Brady Ruediger (9:53.99) and third from Roman Murray (9:55.58) in the 3,200-meter run. Sajan Mishra was fourth (6.82 seconds) and Kyle Schmalenberg fifth (6.86) in the 55 sprint to beat the Northstars’ Derick Hicks in sixth place. Mishra added a sixth in the 300.
Ian Sherlock finished fifth in the 1,000 ahead of Massett in sixth, with Trenton Gallup going 1:35.61 in the 600 for his own fifth-place effort. Achilles Widger was eighth in the 55 hurdles.
