CENTRAL NEW YORK – Still undefeated going into the week, the West Genesee Gold and Skaneateles boys golf teams wanted to keep it that way as the regular season reached and passed its midway point.
By far, WG Gold’s biggest win came last Tuesday, when it knocked off Baldwinsville 191-202 at Westvale Golf Club. Having seen its 24-match win streak halted by Fayetteville-Manlius Green on Sept. 9, the Bees wanted to climb back to the top of the league standings, but the Wildcats would not let them.
Jon Shoults, with a nine-hole 36, tied the Bees’ Owen Frechette for first. Then Jameson Bard and Jason Clifton both shot 38, and Ben Glass had a 39 to equal B’ville’s Billy Shipman before Frank Barbuto clinched it with a 40.
When WG Gold turned back Cicero-North Syracuse Blue 195-204 on Thursday afternoon, Clifton, Jack Einlich and Frank Barbuto each shot 36 to equal Drew Kippen, two behind Nate Bustin, while Nick Stemkoski added a 40.
Senior Day on Friday brought the two WG sides against one another. The Gold Wildcats moved to 8-0, winning 187-203 as Glass, with a 36, edged Fliton and Ashton Fassinger (37) for first place. Einlich shot 38 and 39s were posted by Nick Stemkoski and Dylan Radcliffe.
Before this, WG Blue met Fayetteville-Manlius Green last Monday at Westvale, and the Hornets, avoiding a letdown after ending Baldwinsville’s 24-match win streak on Sept. 9, defeated the Wildcats 193-216.
Jonathan Lape shot 41 for WG Blue, but five F-M green golfers matched or lowered that mark, led by Will Kettell’s 35. Topher Shoults and Alex Cammarata both shot 43 ahead of Colin Straub’s 44 and Henry Steitz’s 45.
WG Blue rebounded at home to beat Liverpool 198-207 two days later. Lincoln Christopher shot 38 to tie the Warriors’ Joe Gravante at the top, while Lape and Max Leubner both shot 39. It took 41s from Cammarata and Andrew Banish to help the Wildcats hang on.
Turning to Skaneateles, it beat back Cazenovia 203-218 last Tuesday despite seeing the other Lakers post the low indiviual round of 38 thanks to Will Guider.
Will Murphy was second with a 39, Graham Bradley and Charlie Girzadas each adding 40. Drew Mancini’s 41 beat a 42 from Cazenovia’s Nico Segall to reach the top five as Jack Marquardt and James Lovier each shot 43.
Beating Jordan-Elbridge 198-279 on Thursday at SCC, the Lakers had Mancini, Grizadas and Bradley tie for first, each posting 38. Murphy had a 41 and Lovier a 43 ahead of the low Eagles’ round of 47 from Caden Hearn.
Marcellus got back in the win column last Wednesday, topping Cortland 219-233. Will Glass shot 39 and John Williams had a 41, while Ben Reome’s 44 equaled that of the Purple Tigers’ Carter Urtz. Dieter Steigerwald added a 49.
In a Friday rematch with the Christian Brothers Academy side it lost to the week before, the Mustangs again took defeat, this time 207-222, though Glass shot 37 at Sunset Ridge to beat Luke Snyder (39) for individual honors. Reome’s 41 tied Emmet Kilmartin and Rowen Lynch for third place.
Westhill, whose only loss came to CBA on Sept. 1, handled Cortland 212-245 last Monday at Camillus Golf Club. Danny Young dazzled with a 36, Grady Pens (41) and Christian Loomis (42) part of a top-three individual sweep as Teddy DeMore shot 46 and Evan Chaddock added a 47.
But the Warriors fell to Homer 231-239 on Wednesday at CGC. Young again had a 36, but no other Westhill golfer topped the 48 from Anthony Sampo as Pens settled for a 49 and Loomis had a 51.
Westhill handled Mexico 210-262 on Thursday afternoon, again with Young at the front as he improved to a 35. DeMore added a 38, with Pens shooting 40 and Chaddock posting 48. A 215-260 win over Chittenango followed on Friday, Young posting a 37 as Pens shot 40 and DeMore a 42.
