ONONDAGA COUNTY – Nearly two years and 24 matches later, someone finally topped the Baldwinsville Red boys golf team in a head-to-head match.
It came last Friday afternoon at Green Lakes, where Fayetteville-Manlius Green, with steady, consistent play, pulled away to defeat the Bees 192-203.
Not since Sept. 16, 2021,when Cicero-North Syracuse Blue topped B’ville, had anyone finished with fewer strokes than the Bees, a span of nearly two full seasons.
And even on this day, Owen Frechette shot the low individual round of 35 for nine holes. However, five of the next six finishing spots went to F-M Green golfers.
Will Kettell led the Hornets with a 37, while Cameron Lukasik and Henry Will each shot 38. Tyler Burns had a 39 to match B’ville’s Billy Shipman, and Duncan McDaniel’s 40 clinched the victory ahead of 42s by Aiden Motala and Alex Blum, Alex Rozlok adding a 45.
For many moments on the last day of August, it appeared C-NS Blue would stop the win streak. However, the Bees did just enough to pull out a 204-205 decision over the Northstars/
Frechette’s 38 tied C-NS Blue’s Drew Kippen’s 38 for top honors. Two of the next three spots went to the Bees, though, as Motala was third with a 40 and Shipman’s 41 matched that of the Northstars’Quinn Empey’s 41.
Though Kaeden Hacker, David Schmidt and Andrew Matyasak each shot 42 to close out the C-NS scoring grid, so did B’ville’s Jacob Penafeather, and needing a 43 to win, the Bees got exactly that score from Caleb Kinley to hang on.
Back in action last Wednesday against West Genesee Blue at Timber Banks, the Bees withstood the 90-degree temperatures to defeat the Wildcats 188-200 and run the win streak to 18.
Motala shot a two-under-par 34, with Blum rising to second place thanks to his 37. Roziok shot a season-best 39, which Frechette and Alex Trasher equaled to match WG Blue’s best rounds from Colin Straub and Andrew Banish.
As B’ville Red was finally caught on Friday, B’ville White lost 224-242 to West Genesee Blue. Dominic Purtell’s 43 was second among individuals to the Wildcats’ Jonathan Lape, but four other WG golfers beat the 49 from Craig Vredenburg. Brayden Sheridan shot 50 and Cole Parker had a 51.
