CENTRAL NEW YORK – As seems to be the case each spring, anyone attempting to try and take down the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team must deal with a talented, well-balanced and deep squad who can win in multiple ways.
Back on Tuesday night, the Lakers shut out Chittenango 16-0, holding the Bears to five shots, all stopped by Emily Evans, while building up an 11-0 halftime advantage.
Paige Willard, with five assists to go with her lone goal, led the attack as Bella Brogan scored four times. Julia O’Connor and Lilly Marquardt each had two goals and one assist, with Camryn Calabro getting a goal and three assists. Goals also went to Anasofia Cirincione, Mara Stanton, Rachel Hackler, Alison Whipple, Emily Huttar and Kiki Morrissey.
It was the same in a 19-3 win over Homer two nights later, the Lakers netting 13 goals in the first half as O’Connor led the charge, eventually scoring five times and adding an assist.
Willard and Calabro had three goals apiece, with Willard getting two assists. Marquardt, Cirincione, Stanton and Brogan each converted twice, Marquardt adding three assists as Cirincione and Brogan both earned two assists. Morrissey had a goal and Tatum Ryan got an assist.
Westhill and Marcellus met up with each other last Tuesday night, and it proved quite an entertaining game, but still ended up tilting 16-11 in Westhill’s favor.
Moving to 11-2 on the season, Westhill saw Rosemary Mahoney pick up five assists to go with her four goals, her passes often going to Kara Rosenberger, who scored six times.
Adelaide Lowery contributed her own three-goal hat trick, with Sophia Lasher scoring twice and adding an assist as Aubrey Holowinski had a goal and Karly Dillobaugh an assist.
Cece Powell put up seven goals for the Mustangs and Claire Card added three goals, but of their teammates, only Sophia Pilon found the net.
As a follow-up, Marcellus lost, 20-7. to Christian Brothers Academy on Thursday, unable to recover from an 11-2 halftime deficit as Maeve Mackenzie (seven goals) and Lilah Kirch (six goals) led the Brothers. Powell, with four goals, also fed Card for two of her three goals.
Without any time to rest, the Mustangs met Central Square on Friday night and, leading 8-5 at halftime, wore down in the second half, allowing the Redhawks to rally and prevail 14-13.
Powell added eight more goals and Card scored four times, but Central Square had a bit more on hand, with six goals from Melayna Miller, three goals apiece from Hannah Reichard and Jenna James plus two goals from Lauren McCorry, who matched Reichard’s three assists.
Playing a fourth game in five days Saturday at Liverpool, Marcellus somehow had enough energy on hand to pull out an 11-9 victory.
Not only did Cece Powell put up five goals to give her 80 for the season, Curtin contributed four goals as goals by Avery Shute and Sophia Pilon, plus six saves from Janie Powell, made the difference.
Jordan-Elbridge took a 15-7 defeat to Southern Hills last Tuesday, though Kelsey Brunelle did get three goals and one assist as Makayla Penird converted twice. Lili Humphreys and Stella Opanhoske added goals as Ryleigh Gill had 13 saves, but the Storm’s Kensington Keane matched the Eagles all by herself thanks to her seven goals.
In Thursday night’s 11-8 defeat to Chittenango, the Eagles were close most of the way, trailing by just one, 7-6, at halftime, but just didn’t get enough possession in the second half to catch the Bears.
Brunelle had two goals, as did Riley Crawford and Brenna Tubbert. Single goals went to Marceline Titus and Briella Gilfus as Tomi Newkirk and Cara Kielbasa led Chittenango with matching three-goal hat tricks.
