BALDWINSVILLE – Rarely has the East Syracuse Minoa girls track and field team achieved something like it did Friday when it knocked off large-school competition to win the John Arcaro Co-Ed Classic at Baldwinsville.
Earning 69 points, the Spartans edged Cicero-North Syracuse (65) and Liverpool (63) to head a strong field that included Jamesville-DeWitt, who finished fifth, plus all the other top area teams.
In a school and meet-record 12.18 seconds, ESM’s Evanni McDuffie beat the field in the 100-meter dash before going to the closing 4×100 relay where, with Anaharie Anderson, Arianna Brennen and Kaleigh Maloof, ESM won in 50.51 to clinch the team title.
Akuot Kuany topped 5 feet 4 inches and won the high jump, with Brennen (5 feet) third, and went 15.49 seconds to gain second place in the 100 hurdles as Brennen was fifth.
Margaret Mading had a second-place triple jump of 34 feet 8 inches. Anderson got second in the 400 hurdles in 1:07.78, while Rachael Ladd was fourth in the 2,000 steeplechase in 8:07.83,
J-D’s Hailey Webber won the shot put, heaving it 38’5” to edge Liverpool’s Allie Cary (38’3 3/4”) as Jillian Webber took fifth, while Nikki Militi, in 59.38 seconds, was the only competitor to beat the one-minute mark in the 400-meter dash.
In the 4×400 relay, the Red Rams’ quartet of Militi, Norah Kirch, Meghana Reddy and Victoria Payne got a time of 4:10.96 and won an event where Fayetteville-Manlius was fourth and ESM fifth. Moving to the discus, Jillian Webber was second with 96’6” and Hailey Webber third with 91’5”.
For its part, F-M won twice in distance races, Maria Kahlifeh taking the 1,500 in 4:48.46 as Hannah Kaercher (4:52.80) got third place before Izzie Sullivan went to win the 3,000 in 9:53.15, with teammate Catherine Walters fifth and Grimes’ Edy Livingston (11:14.79) in fourth place.
Christian Brothers Academy) had Mia Ludington, Abby Nash, Ally Roueche and Mary Sullivan get second in the 4×800 relay in 10:25.18, with ESM fifth.
In the boys Arcaro meet, F-M nearly went to the top, its total of 73 points only trailing host Baldwinsville’s 81 as J-D tied for seventh, ESM was ninth and CBA got 12th place.
Going 1-2 in the 3,200-meter run, the Hornets had Anthony Otis prevail in 9:19.14 over Alex Martinez’s 9:29.58. Then, in the 4×400 relay, Denim Hall, Mason Weires, Vincent Hunt and Nick Donnelly, in 3:30.79, beat out the 3:31.31 from J-D’s Shane Gargiulo, Braydon Johnson, Moujihad Cherif and Andres Valladares.
The Hornets also won in the triple jump when Lugo Nwodeki, with a leap of 43’11”, beat out the 43’3” from Cortland’s Jack Phelan. Anthony Otis, in 4:28.13, got second place in the 1,600-meter run, while Cooper Dereszynski took fourth in the 400 hurdles in 59.89 seconds.
Dan Kenny threw the shot put 42’8” for third place as ESM’s Andrew LaMarche (41’7”) was fifth and Kadarya third in the long jump with 19’6 1/4”.
J-D got a win from Connor Clarkson, who ran the 3,000 steeplecahse in 10:11.25 to edge Auburn’s Ryan Maher (10:11.41) by just 0.16 seconds.
Andres Valladares took the high jump, clearing 6’2” to finish ahead of Hall, who was second topping 6 feet as ESM had Ryan Sullivan (5’10”) in fifth. Kevin Vigneault threw the discus 118’3” to finish fourth.
CBA got most of its points from sprints as Darien Williams won the 200 in 22.43 seconds and also was second in the 100 in 11.09, beating ESM’s Nick Domashenko in third place (11.29) and ESM’s Sumit Kadarya (11.32) in fourth place.
Domashenko also was fifth in the 200 behind the Spartans’ Aidan Hirt in fourth place. Also for the Spartans, Abdi Ayen was fourth in the 110 hurdles in 15.99 seconds.
