CENTRAL NEW YORK – Year after year, area high school boys tennis teams turn out strong singles and doubles players that sweep to Section III honors and vie for state championships, too.
Wanting to do this again in 2023, Fayetteville-Manlius got underway last Tuesday against West Genesee and took every point from the Wildcats on the way to a 7-0 victory.
Another shutout followed on Wednesday, this one from Christian Brothers Academy, who handled Skaneateles 5-0 a day after the Lakers won its season opener over Homer.
Then, in Friday’s 5-0 shutout of Phoenix, CBA saw Chanu Yang and Soren Kang win in singles and Gabriel Yang complete the singles sweep when he beat Cayden McKay 6-0, 6-4.
Over in doubles, Caleb Buddie and Finn Doyle blanked Cooper Graham and Brandon Ingolby 6-0, 6-0, with Fabrizio Arezzo and Hunter Szatkowski beating Ethan Bruno and Dylan Jones 6-2, 6-0.
Then it was the turn of Jamesville-DeWitt, who met Auburn on Thursday afternoon and, despite some marks, was able to beat the Maroons 5-2.
Not only did Mark Bratslavsky, Shreyank Bhatt and Anthony Fico sweep the singles matches, they did so not allowing a game between them against Charles Tracy, Gabriel Volo and Brody Wagner.
In doubles, the teams of Will Sharlow-Carson Souser and Kai Brutsaert-Michael Meskos lost in two sets, but Isiah Sternberg and Dean Bratslvasky beat Tom Deming and Brody Wagner 6-3, 6-0, with Jacob Price and Nathaniel Amare getting a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 decision over Kyle Green and Braden Sherman.
