SYRACUSE – Up against all possible prime competition, the West Genesee boys and girls indoor track and field teams would still make some marks during Thursday’s Section III Class AA championships at SRC Arena.
Both Wildcats sides would finish in fifth place, with the girls picking up 38 points and the boys 34 points as the Cicero-North Syracuse girls and Baldwinsville boys rolled to the team titles.
WG’s girls featured a victory from sophomore Claire Griffin in the 600-meter run. In one minute, 41.85 seconds, Griffin edged the 1:42.34 from C-NS’s Sophia Graham.
Molly Doran nearly won the 55-meter dash, her 7.51 seconds just one-hundredth of a second behind the 7.50 from C-NS’s Marissa Doty, who also prevailed in the 300 as Doran was sixth in 44.39.
In the 4×200 relay, Doran, Griffin, Mya Rufus and Grace McInerney ended up second in 1:50.37 to C-NS’s 1:46.99. McInerney also took fifth in the long jump, going 15 feet 5 ¼ inches.
Long also got third place in the 1,000-meter run in a personal-best 3:02.73. Sarah Fettig, Andrea Conklin, Erin Fortune and Riley Flynn were fifth in the 4×400 relay in 4:29.31 and the Wildcats were sixth in the 4×800 relay in 10:32.26
On the boys side for WG, Dom Burris, Dylan Frost, Rhison Williams and Chris Moser went 1:32.85 in the 4×200 to hold off C-NS (1:32.25) and finish in front.
Burris, in 6.68 seconds, was third in the 55-meter dash behind the winning 6.64 from Utica Proctor’s Hector Perez as Kev Scott was seventh (6.81) and Frost eighth (6.83).
In the long jump, Burris leapt 21’4” for another third-place effort. Scott improved to fourth place in the 300 in 37.49 seconds, ahead of Moser in seventh (37.94) and Williams in eighth (37.99).
Michael Gomes went 4:31.94 at 1,600 meters to finish fifth as Kevin Moser (4:41.60) was seventh. Anthony Edgar took fourth in the 55 hurdles in 8.48 seconds. WG took sixth in the 4×800 in 8:51.12.
Two days earlier, in the sectional Class C and D meets, Bishop Ludden finished fifth in the boys Class D standings.
Porter Sheen, in 11:22.44, edged teammate Jack Ruddy (11:22.82) for second in the 3,200, while Blake Sheen was second in the 600 in 1:36.75 and Taysir Briggs fourth in the long jump with 18’10 1/2”.
On the girls side Ludden’s Ally Kerwin was second in the 300 in 46.08 seconds. Brynn Marvin took third in the girls 1,500 in 5:37.96. The Gaelic Knights were third in the 4×200 in 2;01.40.
Jordan-Elbridge was in the Class C sectional meet. Abby Bates took fifth in the girls 3,000 and Peyton Bates fifth in the boys 3,200. Teagan Disinger was fifth in the girls 55 hurdles as Alex Kunz took sixth in the boys 1,000 and Roanan Ross fifth in the boys weight throw.
