CENTRAL NEW YORK – Over the course of two days last weekend, area high school indoor track and field teams began their 2023 slates, with most of them competing at SRC Arena in the John Arcaro Memorial Invitational.
West Genesee finished third in the girls portion and fourth in the boys portion of the afternoon session, while Solvay was fifth in the boys event and seventh in the girls event.
WG’s boys had Zach Hahn, Anthony Edgar, Peyton Manipole and Dylan Frost win the 4×400 relay in 3:47.02, with Solvay fifth. Edgar took third in the long jump as Solvay’s Jaysin Bliss was fifth, matching his finish in the high jump.
Going 1-23 at 1,600 meters, the Wildcats had Michael Gomes, in 4:40.34, beat Kevin Moser (4:44.05) and Casey Comny in third. Chris Moser won the 300-meter dash in 37.77 seconds.
Kev Scott got third in the 55 sprint but helped Manipole, Francisco Cross and Zyaire Davidson win the 4×200 in 1:37.21, again with Solvay fifth.
Solvay had Redd Long take second in the 3,200-meter run in 11:44.89, with Bishop Ludden’s Porter Sheen third and the Bearcats’ Jack Burke fourth. Jayden Jones had a third-place shot put toss of 35’3” as Anthony McCormick got fifth place in the discus.
The WG girls’ Chloe Fietze was second at 1,500 meters in 5:16.76 with Brynn Marvin fifth. Molly Doran went 7.72 seconds in the 55-meter dash for second place and helped WG take second in the 4×200 relay in 1:54.20.
Claire Griffin was third in the 1,000-meter run as Rebecca Dickey took third in the 3,000-meter run. WG took third in the 4×800 relay and Annissa Lee was fifth in the weight throw.
Rachel Willsey, for Solvay, was third in the long jump with 14’5” and fourth in the 55-meter hurdles, with Emily Rolince fourth in the weight throw and Emma Rutkowski sixth in the triple jump.
Earlier, in the morning session, Westhill finished fourth on the girls side and sixth on the boys side, the girls featuring Ashley Bolesh winning the triple jump by going 33’5 1/2”.
Kate Bendall, fourth in the triple jump, took second in the 55 hurdles in 9.30 seconds, with Emma Murphy fourth as Bendall had a second-place long jump of 15’3 1/4”.
Allison Langham was third in the 55 sprint in 7.70 to go with a fourth in the 300, while Mary Kate Rewakowski cleared 7’6” for third place in the pole vault.
For the Westhill boys, Drew O’Reilly ran the 3,200 in 9:56.69 to finish third, Anthony Osorio was fourth in the triple jump and Josh Dabbiero fifth in the 55 hurdles. Both Westhill sides were fifth in the 4×800 and the boys took fourth in the 4×200.
A day earlier, at Utica University, Marcellus saw its boys team place second in the fourth Mohawk Valley ITA meet of the winter, its 60 points only trailing the 87 from large-school power Liverpool.
Andrew McCaffery was fourth in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet as he, along with Xander Szalach, Ethan Snyder and Joe Striffler were second in the 4×200 in 1:38.27. Szalach was fifth in the high jump (5’4”) and, in 39.13 seconds, topped Paul Swenson (39.40) for seventh in the 300.
Owen Alexander, in 9.37 seconds, was fifth in the 55 hurdles, inches ahead of Lukas Grieb (9.38) in sixth, but Grieb helped Nolan Manahan, Ay-Zoh Shaw and Paul Swenson get second in the 4×800 in 9:36.77. Ian Potter had a fifth-place long jump of 18’10 1/2”, with Striffler fifth in the triple jump.
For the Marcellus girls, Bailey Ellis was fifth in the shot put with 27’10” as the Mustangs were also fifth in the 4×400 in 4:46.30.
Jordan-Elbridge saw its boys team gain four points as Alex Kunz was fourth in the 1,000 in 2:53.36, with Kunz, Peyton Bates, Connor Boylan and Hollis Frost sixth in the 4×800 in 10:04.33 as Bates was 10th in the 1,600.
