CENTRAL NEW YORK – Whether close to home at SRC Arena or elsewhere, area high school indoor track and field teams remained busy even as many others rested during the holiday break.
The Westhill Invitational on Wednesday drew a large field that included Skaneateles, who saw senior Maddie Wright emerge victorious in the high jump, clearing 5 feet 1 inch to beat out the 5 feet from Springville’s Aaliyah Sansone.
Winning for the boys Lakers in the weight throw, Will Feeney, the school record-holder in that event, unleashed a throw of 52’3” as no one else even reached 47 feet. Solvay’s Dylan Mumford was sixth with 40 feet.
And the Skaneateles girls won the 4×200 relay as Kyla Palmer, Alice Spaulding, Ellie Springer and Gianna Caraccio went one minute, 52.96 seconds to beat the 1:54.31 from Baldwinsville.
Springer topped 7 feet in the girls pole vault for fifth place as Spaulding had a fifth-place shot put toss of 30’7” and sixth-place weight throw of 31’10”.
In the girls 600-meter invitational race, Palmer was second in 1:38.65, beating out Westhill’s Ashley Bolesh (1:39.33) in third as Cicero-North Syracuse’s Kate Putman won in 1:38.04.
The boys Lakers’ Max Paciorek was second in the boys long jump with 19’2” to the 19’7 3/4” from Baldwinsville’s Brandon Levin.
Westhill’s Kate Bendall led her side, victorious in the long jump by unleashing a top leap of 16’1 1/4”. Solvay’s Rachel Willsey finished sixth with 14’4” as Skaneateles’ Gianna Caraccio was eighth.
Also, Bendall was second in the 55 hurdles in 9.26 seconds as Emma Murphy (9.47) was fourth. Allison Langham took fourth in the 55 sprint in 7.76 as Illeans Hopkins tied for sixth (4’8”) in the high jump.
Bendall and Murphy helped Westhill to second in the shuttle hurdles in 39.46 seconds to C-NS’s 39.31 as Mallie Alt cleared 8 feet for third in the pole vault. Warriors were third in the 4×200 relay in 1:55.61 and fifth in the 4×400 in 4:43.92.
On the boys side for Westhill, Carter Buckman was victorious in the pole vault, the only athlete to clear 10’6” as Baldwinsville’s Grayson Brady (10 feet) was second. Skaneateles’ Will Feeney was sixth in the shot put with 37’6”.
The Warriors’ shuttle relay team finished third in 38.23 seconds as Solvay was sixth. Drew O’Reilly was sixth in the 1,600-meter invitational feature, with Owen Mulholland ninth in the 600 and Nazaire Williams tied for ninth in the high jump.
West Genesee was in action that same day at Utica College’s Hutton Dome for the CNY Holiday Classic, finishing fourth in the boys division with 49 points, not far from Saratoga Springs’ winning total of 63.
The Wildcats won the 4×200 as Dom Burris, Dylan Frost, Chris Moser and Rhison Williams went 1:33.55 to beat out the 1:34.97 from runner-up Colonie.
Kevin Moser was second in the 3,200-meter run in 9:59.52 to Auburn’s Keegan Brady (9:56.37), while Chris Moser got third in the 400-meter dash in 52.10 seconds as Michael Gomes (53.91) was eighth.
Burris was fourth in the long jump with 20’3 1/2” and got to sixth in the 55 sprint in 6.83 seconds. Casey Comny got sixth place in the 800-meter run in 2:13.42 as Anthony Edgar was eighth in the 55 hurdles in 9.14.
Comny helped the Wildcats finish third in the 4×800 in 8:59.29, with Edgar part of the 4×400 side that also got third place in 3:45.11.
WG’s girls picked up 19 points to tie for 15th place as most of the points came from Claire Griffin, Zoe Maupin, Peyton Long and Chloe Feitze finishing second (9:54.24) to Shaker (9:27.63) in the 4×800.
Grace McInerney ran to sixth place in the 400 in 1:05.06, with Molly Doran sixth in the 55 sprint in 7.84 seconds and Mya Rufus ninth in the 300. McInerney aided the Wildcats’ fifth-place (4:28.40) 4×400 side.
