CENTRAL NEW YORK – This is the week where area high school boys golf teams compete in their respective Section III fall tournaments, vying for spots in a state qualifier that will not take place until late May.
Before that, there was one more full week of regular-season matches, with the volume picking up as the rain gradually went away and drier weather returned.
It was still wet last Tuesday when Skaneateles, improving to 10-1 on the season, put together a 206-236 victory over LaFayette.
Tyson DiRubbo nearly matched par at Skaneateles Country Club, shooting a 37, with Jack Marquardt putting up a 38. Drew Mancini’s 40 beat the 41 from the Lancers’ Jameson Bucktooth as Will Cowden had a 44.
A day later, Skaneateles rolled past Phoenix 212-257, this time led by Marquardt shooting a 37 at Beaver Meadows as DiRubbo had a 40 and Mancini added a 41. Henry Major finished fourth with a 42 and Graham Bradley shot 48.
Yet another win followed on Thursday, Skaneateles handling Tully 221-243. DiRubbo and Marquardt both shot 40 at SCC in front of Murphy’s 45 and Cowden’s 46. Max McConochy finished with a 50.
To complete a perfect 4-0 week, Skaneateles topped Jordan-Elbridge 193-242 Friday at SCC behind a 35 from Marquardt and 36 from DiRubbo. Cowden’s 40 beat out 41s from Murphy and Major as the Eagles’ Caden Hearn led his side with a 41.
Westhill took an 8-1 record into last Friday’s match against unbeaten Christian Brothers Academy at Drumlins, where good rounds by Danny Young and Aiden Ryan could not prevent a 196-212 loss to the Brothers.
Young’s 38 was the low individual total and Ryan, with a 39, tied CBA’s Emmet Kilmartin for second. But five other Brothers players had 39s and 40s ahead of Devin Young and Grady Pens, who both shot 43.
West Genesee had both of its teams play in last Tuesday’s rain, with the Gold side taking a 200-201 loss to Liverpool at Foxfire Golf Club.
Ben Glass shot a 39, behind the 38s from Liverpool’s Brady Michaud and Alex Salanger and matched by Bradley Cole. Max DeMass and Jason Clifton both shot 40, while Ryan Till, Tyler Anastasio and Jameson Bard had matching totals of 41, but the Warriors hung on as Joe Sacco (41) and Owen Salanger (44) rounded out its scoring column.
But WG Gold turned it around on Wednesday, defeating Cicero-North Syracuse Blue 188-191 at Westvale.
Till’s 35 trailed a blistering 32 by the Northstars’ Drew Kippen, but Glass and Clifton tied for third with a 37 and DeMass matched Jack Wolanski’s 38. Anthony Pirro’s 41 helped the Wildcats hang on.
Playing once more on Friday, WG Gold could not keep Baldwinsville from completing an undefeated regular season, falling 203-209 to the Bees at Timber Banks.
Till’s 39 tied B’ville’s Keegan Lynch for second, but they trailed the 36 from Aiden Motala, while Glass and Owen Zoanetti both shot 42. Clifton and Anastasio each posted 43.
WG’s Blue team beat Cicero-North Syracuse Green 191-210 at Westvale, led by a 35 from Will Shields and 36 from Jake Elinich. Jared Jaeger’s 39 equaled the Northstars’ Ethan Matthews and Kyle Kulikowsky, while Kolton Castrello had a40 and Max Walker added a 41.
In Wednesday’s 194-222 defeat to Fayetteville-Manlius Green, WG Blue had Jon Shoults finish with a 43 and Shields shoot a 44 behind a quintet of Hornets led by Jack Antshel and Luke Weisiger, who each posted 37 at Cavalry Club.
When WG Blue beat F-M’s White team 209-213 a day later at Woodcrest, Shields shot a 39 and Castrello posted a 40, with Frankie Barbuto and Jonathan Lape both adding 43 and Lincoln Christopher shooting 44.
J-E was the only local team to play last Monday in wet, windy weather, the Eagles taking a 214-226 defeat to Tully at Millstone.
Caden Hearn and Ben Weller both shot season-best totals of 40, beaten only by the 39 from the Black Knights’ Nate Melton. Dave Lawless had a 45, with Devin King (50) beating out a 51 from Eamon Willoughby.
In Thursday’s better conditions, J-E fell 228-235 to LaFayette, who got a 39 from Brett Bucktooth and a 40 from Joe Coletti ahead of 43s from Weller and King. Heard had a 44 and Conall Fraser shot 45, but three Lancers beat Willoughy’s total of 60.
