CICERO – Most of the area’s high school track and field teams are guaranteed to have a presence at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium for this weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.
During last Thursday’s Section III state qualifier at C-NS, Skaneateles junior Kyla Palmer continued to dazzle in the sprints, twice winning races.
In the Division II (small school) 400-meter dash, Palmer posted 56.49 seconds to beat out Westhill junior Ashley Bolesh, who was second in 56.92. Those were the two fastest times of the meet.
Then Palmer went to the 200-meter dash where, in 25.65 seconds, she held off Altmar-Parish-Williamstown’s Claire Jensen (25.77) to win that race, too.
Another victory for the Lakers was earned by Maddie Wright in the high jump, Wright clearing 5 feet with fewer misses than Marcellus senior Heidi Steigerwald and Jordan-Elbridge senior Tatianna Parkolap.
Westhill saw its top sprinter, Angie Mesa-Espinosa, win the 100-meter dash in 12.64 seconds and help Bolesh, Elle Herrera and Kate Bendall win the 4×100 relay in 49.27 seconds. No one else broke the 51-second mark.
Mesa-Espinosa went on to finish fourth in the 200 in 25.93 seconds. The Warriors were fifth in the 4×400 relay in 4:18.75 as Jules Bleskoski was fourth in the Division II 1,500-meter run in 5:08.36 and Riley Grooms tied for fourth in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet.
J-E had Vassianna Klock win the Division II(small school), 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:20.95. Alex Kunz finished fourth among Division II runners in the boys 3,000 steeplechase in 10:43.96.
West Genesee saw a victory from Peter McMahon in the boys 3,200-meter run, his time of 9:29.10 more than 19 seconds ahead of the field as Bryce Bort took second in the triple jump, going 42’2 1/2”, and cleared 6 feet for fifth in the high jump.
Aidan Walsh ran 1,600 meters in 4:42.71, with Chris Moser fourth (23.06) and Payton Manipole sixth (23.79) in the 200 as Kev Scott was seventh in exactly 27 seconds and Bort ninth in 24.58.
Dom Burris had a seventh-place long jump of 19’10” and also was eighth in the 100-meter dash and helped WG’s 4×100 team finish fourth in 44.09 as the Wildcats were seventh in the 4×400 and Kevin Moser ran the 3,200 in 10:17.04.
WG’s girls were victorious in the Division I 4×400 thanks to Chloe Feitze, Sarah Fettig, Grace McInerney and Lilliana Iacampo, who went 4:16.83 to edge Baldwinsville’s second-place 4:16.89.
The Wildcats’ 4×800 relay team finished third in 10:20.42 as Fietze ran the 800 in 2:29.32 and Zoe Orr was sixth in the 400 hurdles. Alexcis Rydelek threw the discus 85’2” for fifth place.
Moving back to boys track, Westhill’s 4×800 team of Brian Kenny, Brandon Mulholland, Drew O’Reilly and Carter Buckman were second in 8:25.33 to Cazenovia’s 8:20.06, with Marcellus seventh and Skaneateles ninth.
Patrick Mahoney, clearing 11’6”, was second in the high jump and Carter Buckman third by topping 11 feet.
In the 3,200, O’Reilly was second in Division II in 9:48.50. Mulholland posted a time of 2:02.44 in the 800-meter run. Evan Frost was fourth in the 200 in 23.74 seconds.
Marcellus had, on the boys side, Peter McCaffrey go second in the triple jump with 42’9 1/4”, with Andrew McCaffrey topping 10 feet for seventh place in the pole vault.
Tyler Herr earned third in the 100 in 11.44 seconds and in the 200 as McCaffrey and had a fifth-place long jump of 19’11 3/4”. Mason Grieb took fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:00.47.
Skaneateles saw Max Paciorek nearly win the Division II long jump, his clearance of 6 feet only behind the 6’4” from Weedsport’s Troy Brown.
The Lakers were fifth in the 4×100 in 46.10 seconds as Paciorek, Seamus Fogerty, Herschel Eidel and Jack Phillips were third in the 4×400 in 3:36.89. Phillips ran the 400 in 52.94. Will Feeneey was ninth in the shot put.
The Marcellus girls had Bailey Ellis fourth in the shot put with 29’5” and were fifth in the 4×800 in 10:29.86.
