ONONDAGA COUNTY – Remaining in top form even after the early-week weather interruption, the West Genesee baseball team built its win streak to seven games heading into Monday’s reunion with Baldwinsville, their first match-up since the Wildcats lost to the Bees in last June’s Section III Class AA final.
WG made it five wins in a row last Monday against Liverpool, with a big mid-game scoring surge keying a 9-2 win over the Warriors.
Two-run rallies in the first and third innings erased a quick 1-0 deficit, but a run in the fourth and four runs in the fifth produced a getaway.
Jacob Severson and Ryan Klementowski each had two hits and two RBIs. Luis Suarez scored twice and Jake DePalma also driving in two runs. Going five innings on the mound, Talon Elkins struck out eight and only allowed one hit.
WG’s sixth straight win was over Fayetteville-Manlius by that same 9-2 margin, this time built through four first-inning runs followed by a two-run fourth and three-run seventh.
The Hornets’ five errors led to many of these runs as Jared Jaeger earned two RBIs, with Severson and Vincent Firenze also driving in runs. Wyatt Braun pitched five innings, striking out seven.
When WG met up Saturday against reigning sectional Class A champion Christian Brothers Academy, the fun continued for the Wildcats, who defeated the Brothers 4-2.
The two sides were scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when WG struck for all of its runs against CBA pitcher Luke Boule, one scored each by Suarez, Severson, DePalma and Dan Flaherty.
That was all Elkins needed. Getting a complete game on the mound, Elkins did surrender a pair of sixth-inning runs, but otherwise kept the Brothers’ bats quiet, giving up just three hits and two walks.
Back on Wednesday, Bishop Ludden faced undefeated Pulaski and took a 5-3 loss to the Blue Devils.
Peter Dunham’s three-run home run in the bottom of the first was all the Gaelic Knights could manage. Dunham pitched and Pulaski got to him for a pair of runs in the second and third innings, plus a run in the fifth.
Rebounding a day later, Ludden routed Cato-Meridian 16-3, Peter Dunham’s home run and four RBIs highlighting an attack where Joey Adamo and Jimmy Westers got two RBIs apiece. Then the Gaelic Knights took a 4-1 loss to Bishop Grimes on Friday afternoon.
