CENTRAL NEW YORK – After its first defeat of the season to West Genesee on April 16, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls lacrosse team went back to running over rivals in the SCAC Empire division.
The Red Rams handled last Monday’s showdown with Fulton, putting away the Red Raiders 15-7 with a well-balanced attack where five different players had multiple goals.
Brooke Bort, with three goals and three assists, led the way, while Macy Durkin had three goals and one assist. Merris Kessler, Lindsay Hildreth and Kate Wilcox each scored twice, Kessler getting two assists.
Caroline Stone notched a team-best four assists, joining Sydney Balotin and Kate Barclay with single goals as Balotin and Barclay also earned assists.
Three days and one snowstorm later, J-D handled Syracuse City 20-5 as its attack got even more diverse behind Kessler, who had five goals and one assist.
Stone, with three goals and three assists, matched Kessler’s point total. Durkin got two goals and three assists as Hildreth, Brooke Bort, Laney Bort and Campbell Endries also scored twice. Balotin and Sadie Withers had single goals.
Fayetteville-Manlius would take on West Genesee last Wednesday night after a 24-hour weather postponement and drop an 11-10 thriller to the Wildcats.
Taking a timeout after a quick 4-0 start by WG, the Hornets scored four straight to pull even, and from there neither side led by more than two the rest of the night.
Down 9-7 at halftime, F-M put in three straight goals for a 10-9 edge, only to get shut out for the last nine-plus minutes as the Wildcats got Reis Pagan to tie it and Olivia Blanding to hit the game-winner with 23 seconds left.
Julianna Cogliandro, with four goals, and Ava Angello, with three goals and two assists, paced the Hornets’ attack. Melanie Steigerwald had a goal and four assists as Grace Reyna earned the other goal. Cogliandro and Elrose Hanlon had five ground balls apiece.
In Saturday’s wild 22-12 win over Shenendehowa, F-M got double-digit totals from Angello, who netted 10 goals, and Steigerwald, who set a school mark with 10 assists. Cogliandro got six goals and two assists, while Emily Noel netted three goals. Sophia Leonard, Talbot Baldwin and Addison Benz added single goals.
Christian Brothers Academy prevailed Thursday over Tully/Fabius-Pompey 15-2, getting a big effort from Gracie Britton, who amassed six goals and four assists.
Amelia Bonacci got six assists to go with her lone goal as Lilah Kirch scored three times. Sydney Vaughn, Madison Cecilia, Allie Quinn, Mia Kirch and Maeve Mackenzie had one goal apiece.
Yet CBA suffered a painful 15-14 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday where it jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first 10 minutes, was up 10-5 at halftime and still had the lead late in the second half.
The Warriors stormed back, though, tied it 14-14, and won it on Abby Geary’s overtime goal. Britton had five goals and two assists, with Mackenzie netting four goals and Bonacci getting two goals and three assists. Maggie Tifft led Liverpool with six goals.
East Syracuse Minoa was still in search of its first win of the season when it fell 15-6 to Syracuse last Wednesday night, the Spartans getting three goals from Anna Paduano as Emily Murnane, Rylyn Commisso and Halie Amodio put up one goal apiece.
It was closer on Thursday night, but ESM lost 12-7 to Oswego. Leah Rehm scored twice, with Paduano, Mary Kate Godleski, Sophia Ferris and Andrianna Byrd also netting goals as Alayna DiBlasi led the Buccaneers with four goals and one assist.
On Saturday, ESM took a 17-6 defeat to Rome Free Academy. Paduano had three assists and Commisso scored twice, with Godleski earning a goal and two assists.
