LIVERPOOL – A high-profile meet for the Liverpool track and field teams involved a visit from Baldwinsville last Wednesday afternoon, the snow clearing out in time for the SCAC Metro division opener.
And it went quite well for the girls Warriors, who leaned on the duo of Beatrize Gurgol and Mia Wright for plenty of points during a 99-42 victory over the Bees.
Gurgol got going in the 400-meter hurdles, where she posted a top time of one minute, 18.56 seconds. She then went to the high jump and cleared 4 feet 10 inches while also recording a win in the long jump with 15’2 ½”.
As for Wright, she swept the sprints, going 13.19 seconds in the 100-meter dash and then topping the field in the 200-meter dash in 27.22 seconds.
Long-distance races were swept, too, with Eva Woodworth taking the 1,500-meter run in 5:18.78 before Taylor Page had an impressive 2:33.53 in the 800-meter run.
In the throwing events, the Warriors had Allie Cary unleash a shot put toss of 33’1”, while Emily Fenner beat the field in the discus with 74’5”.
It proved far different in the boys meet between Liverpool and B’ville, with the Warriors taking a 102-39 defeat despite Ryan Hagan’s clean sweep of the distance races.
Hagan broke the two-minute mark in the 800-meter run, going 1:58.91, and went from there to run 1,600 meters in 4:27.66 and take the 3,200-meter run in 9:37.03.
Ethan LaMontagne cleared 9 feet in the pole vault, while Nick Dailey was first in the 400 hurdles in 1:06.05. But the Bees had a string of top-three finishes and Owen Weaver won four events, taking the 400-meter dash in 52.21 seconds while also winning the long jump (20’ ¼”), triple jump (38’7 ¾”) and high jump (5’10”).
Cicero-North Syracuse had its own league opener that same day, getting a clean sweep against West Genesee and Nottingham as the girls Northstars beat the Wildcats 91-50 and the Bulldogs 128-9.
