CENTRAL NEW YORK – It turned out to be quite a Tuesday night for a quintet of area high school boys basketball teams, each of whom earned impressive victories.
Even without leading scorer Dan Anderson in the lineup, Christian Brothers Academy defeated perennial power Westhill 76-65.
Jamesville-DeWitt passed a milestone as, in its 71-50 victory over PSLA-Fowler, Red Rams head coach Jeff Ike earned his 100th career victory.
Shaking off back-to-back losses, Fayetteville-Manlius prevailed 64-36 over Corcoran as East Syracuse Minoa and Bishop Grimes won big, the Sparatns romping past Oswego 70-38 and the Cobras handling Mexico 68-35.
For the third consecutive game, CBA was missing Anderson, and it had split the previous two, including a 61-57 loss to state Class AA no. 13-ranked Rochester Aquinas where it could not hold on to a 35-30 halftime lead despite Braeden Burns pouring in 26 points.
Against 12-3 Westhill, though, the Brothers were red-hot at the outset, building a 31-16 lead by the end of the first quarter before cooling down in the game’s middle stages.
Unable to take full advantage, the Warriors still trailed, 55-46, going to the fourth quarter, and CBA put things away led again by Burns, who finished with 24 points but got more help than he did against Aquinas.
Joe Nicholson had 15 points and Steve DeRegis 11 points, the pair combining for seven 3-pointers as Amarri Pitts also had 11 points. Westhill, in defeat, got a career-best 31 points from Kam Langdon.
In J-D’s case, it won its 10th consecutive game while also securing the 100th win for Ike, who has mostly kept the Red Rams at a high level after he replaced Bob McKenney.
Known mostly for its defense this season, J-D sprinted out to a 34-20 lead on PSLA-Fowler by halftime, then outscored the Falcons 26-15 in the third quarter to put the game away.
Brendan Kohberger was unstoppable in the paint, pouring in 27 points. Help came from Andrew Stickle, who had 11 points, while Matt Keeler had seven points. Ian Delpha and Ben Schallinger had six points apiece.
At F-M, the Hornets needed something good to happen after consecutive defeats to West Genesee and Cicero-North Syracuse, and jumped all over Corcoran, leading 21-8 after one quarter and 39-20 by halftime.
Continuing to pull further away, F-M saw Trevor Roe put up 26 points, with Luke Davidson and Sam Dunn getting 10 points apiece.
This happened as ESM, who entered the week 6-9, climbed a bit closer to the .500 mark with its dominant performance against Oswego.
Each of the 11 Spartans players that saw action earned at least one field goal, Aiden Betts leading the way with 14 points as Tristan Henderson got 11 points. Ben Cesarini earned eight points and Andrew Graham got six points. Jusmin Kalkan and Dillon Abreu had five points apiece.
Bishop Grimes would take control against Mexico with a 20-4 dash through the second quarter, and ably spread its production around while doing so.
Deng Garang, with 14 points, led a well-balanced attack where Jon Corl earned 13 points and Sylvester Seton added 12 points. Eric Wall nearly got to double figures, too, finishing with nine points.
A day later, Manlius-Pebble Hill made it an early-week clean sweep when it defeated LaFayette 60-49.
Two Trojans had double-doubles, James Wildhack earning 20 points and 10 rebounds as Miguel Gonzalez had 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Qon Ewing had 15 points as Kevin Fratastitnav had eight rebounds to go with his seven points.
