ITHACA – Baldwinsville girls swimmer Eva Smith went after a top-10 finish in the 100-yard backstroke during the Nov. 19-20 New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships – and got it in record fashion.
Swimming at Ithaca College, Smith sped to a preliminary-round time of 58.32 seconds, the 10th-fastest time.
Then, in the finals, Smith broke her own school record by going 57.39 seconds to take seventh place among NYSPHSAA swimmers and ninth overall.
Sacred Heart’s Tess Howley won the Federation 100 backstroke in 53.13 seconds, with Horace Greeley’s Sabrina Johnston (54.45) the public-school champion, less than three seconds ahead of Smith.
Meanwhile, Smith’s B’ville teammate, Ashley Konz, also swam in the 100 backstroke, where she was unable to reach the finals.
