ONONDAGA COUNTY – A long and challenging season for the Christian Brothers Academy girls golf team had resulted in a perfect 14-0 season, the second consecutive unbeaten run through the Onondaga High School League to go what it did in 2019.
But it would culminate with the Brothers seeking league and sectional honors. The league tournament went first, taking place Thursday at Woodcrest Golf Club and, as it had done all season, CBA would go to the top of the standings – as would Bishop Grimes golfer Sarah Falgiatano.
On the team side, the Brothers’ total of 412 easily outdistanced six challengers, with Marcellus taking second with 440 and Westhill taking third place with 446.
All five of CBA’s top players improved as their rounds went on, with lower scores on the back nine than on the front.
For example, Annie Kilmartin followed up a first-nine 53 with a second-nine 45. That put her second in the individual race, her 98 trailing Falgiatano, who posted a 95 and would not get caught to claim the individual championship.
Also finishing in the top 10, CBA’s Hana Kang had a back-nine 46 after a front-nine 55 and her 101 put her in fifth place. Aubrey Mills, shooting a 105, tied for sixth place, with Bella Meade getting a 108 to finish alone in eighth place.
A day later, at the Links at Erie Village, Jamesville-DeWitt achieved a similar triumph in the Salt City Athletic Conference Empire division tournament.
The Red Rams, with a team score of 393, outlasted East Syracuse Minoa, who was second with 418 as Abby Neuman led J-D, her 90 second among individuals behind the 87 from Central Square’s Emily Barnes.
Jaeda Robinson had a 96 for the Rams, ahead of a 102 from Sophia Ferris and a 105 from Sarah Burgess. ESM’s Helaina Scolaro matched Robinson’s 96 to lead the Spartans as Jessica Griffith shot 100 and Helaina Scolaro added 108.
In boys golf, Manlius-Pebble Hill put its 6-0 record on the line against 6-0 Marcellus on May 27 at Tecumseh and nearly pulled off the win.
Johnny Gruninger shot a 33, with Jack Marquardt and Tommy Wildhack both posting 40. Still, the Mustangs beat the Trojans 205-208, led by a 35 from Jay Colella, a 37 from Will Glass and a 38 from John White.
All of this, of course, is a prelude to the boys sectional tournament on Monday at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course, where golfers from the fall season at CBA, J-D, ESM and Fayetteville-Manlius would join MPH seeking team and individual honors.
