CENTRAL NEW YORK – The Chittenango boys lacrosse team found success three times during last week’s crowded slate of games, improving its overall record to 4-4.
It started out well against Vernon-Verona-Sherrill last Monday night, with the Bears topping the Red Devils 16-7.
Caleb Barnard got 10 points earned through six goals and four assists, while while Brendon Barnard scored three times and got four assists of his own. Bradley Tily had four goals and one assist as Ethan Robles converted twice and Tom Navin also had a goal.
The Barnard brothers did even more in the Bears’ 13-12 win over Jordan-Elbridge a night later, Caleb piling up eight goals and an assist and Brady getting three goals and one assist. Tily helped by scoring twice as each of Dan Eisinger’s 10 saves proved crucial.
Now at the .500 mark (3-3), Chittenango tried to climb above it against Skaneateles on Thursday, but never got close in a 19-4 defeat where it led 3-1 after one period before the Lakers took charge with seven unanswered goals the rest of the half. Caleb Barnard ended up with three of his team’s four goals.
Then, on Saturday, playing its fourth game in six days, the Bears ignored the possible fatigue and beat the Fulton Red Raiders by a score of 15-6.
Ethan Robles, netting four goals, matched Brendon Barnard’s total, with Tily joining Caleb Barnard as they each earned three goals and three assists. Tom Navin had the other goal and Jack Lapmhere added a pair of assists.
Going into the week at 0-3, the Chittenango girls lacrosse side nearly broke that skid last Monday in its own game against VVS, only to fall 9-8 in overtime.
They were tied 3-3 at the end of first half and 8-8 at the close of regulation, the Bears led mostly by Cara Kielbasa, who netted a career-best five goals.
Caitlyn Sgambellone, Alazayah Smith and Ashley O’Hara also had goals. Abby Penfield stopped 14 of the 23 shots she faced as, for the Red Devils,Anna Rossi (five goals) and Arayla Garcia (three goals) led the way.
Another defeat followed on Tuesday, Chittenango falling 15-10 to Jordan-Elbridge, who got eight goals from Gabrielle Gunnip, twice the total of Kielbasa, who led the Bears with four tallies. O’Hara and Newkirk both scored twice as the Bears went on to a 15-1 defeat to Skaneateles late in the week.
