CENTRAL NEW YORK – All of that time spent outdoors over the course of a long winter wondering whether there would even be a season bonded the Cazenovia ice hockey team in a special way.
What’s more, the Lakers performed once the games finally arrived.
At 1-2 through the first week of its abbreviated season, Cazenovia got a special win last Tuesday night when it went to Casey Park and claimed a wild 8-6 decision over the Maroons.
Less than 30 seconds into the game, the Lakers were on the board, eventually gaining a 2-1 advantage through one period. Then it went back and forth in the second period, each side scoring twice.
Early in the final period, Cazenovia netted back-to-back goals to extend its margin to 6-3, only to see Auburn roar back with three goals in a span of less than three minutes to tie the game.
Keeping its poise, the Lakers would regain the lead with less than five minutes left and then add an insurance goal as Gannon Houghton led Cazenovia, putting together a three-goal hat trick to follow up the four goals and one assist he put together in a 5-0 shutout of Liverpool the week before.
Jack Donlin scored twice and added a pair of assists. Jacob Owens finished with two goals and one assist as Bryson Weaver had one goal and one assist.
Forrest Ives contributed a pair of assists, single assists going to Connor Grzeszczuk and Gavin Winn. Cy McCrink finished with 24 saves as Austin Black (two goals, three assists) paced Auburn’s attack.
