Having endured a long string of schedule alterations relating to both the COVID-19 pandemic and Central New York’s changing weather, the Cazenovia field hockey team was finally able to see some regular game action.
Perhaps not by coincidence, the Lakers performed better, as indicated by last Monday’s soggy rematch with Canastota that ended in a 1-1 tie with the Raiders.
They had met two days earlier, on Oct. 24, and Canastota prevailed 1-0. And the Raiders again went in front during the rematch as Breeah Shaw put in the goal, assisted by Jessica Evans.
But Cazenovia pulled even in the second half, breaking through thanks to Maddie Young taking a pass from Lily Sorbello and putting it past Raiders goalie Rebecca McClure.
Each side would have ample chances for the rest of regulation and in seven-on-seven overtime, but not break the tie. Mackenzie Halliday turned away 12 of Canastota’s 13 shots, with McClure recording eight saves.
Still at home, the Lakers saw the bad weather again disrupt the schedule, wiping out Thursday’s game against Homer at Burton Street Elementary.
Then, a day later, Cazenovia visited Weedsport to make up an Oct. 19 weather postponement, and despite having most of the scoring opportunities, the Lakers took a 1-0 defeat.
All told, Cazenovia had 12 shots on net, but Warriors goalie Mariah Quigley turned them all away. Halliday had five saves, but Weedsport’s Emma Stark put in the game’s only goal, assisted by Suzie Nemec.
What remains for the Lakers (1-3-2) in this start-and-stop sesaon is a trio of games this week at Homer, Camden and Baldwinsville.
