A strong run through the Onondaga High School League Liberty division helped propel the Cazenovia boys golf team to the top of the standings.
Staying there meant, among other things, getting the best of its neighbors from Chittenango, and the Lakers did so in lopsided fashion last Monday afternoon, prevailing 202-276.
Over nine holes at Cazenovia Country Club, Alex Moesch proved the top individual, his 37 two strokes ahead of the 39 posted by the Bears’ Tanner Smith.
Though Cazenovia’s Jack Byrnes and Chittenango’s Tyrus Kelly both shot 40, no other Bears players broke 60 and the Lakers got a 42 from Liam Colligan and a 43 from Cody Dickinson, with Ben Orbach adding a 49.
Chittenango moved on and played last Tuesday against LaFayette at Orchard Vali, where it lost 242-249. Kelly had a 40 to edge the Lancers’ Nelson Jones (41) at the top as Garvey got a 43. Smith shot a 47 and Landon Martin added a 56.
In Friday’s 222-269 loss to Tully at Rogues Roost, Kelly, shooting a 39, edged Tanner Smith by one stroke, but the Black Knights had the next six best scores ahead of Nate Smith’s 60 as Ryan Shute and Tom McKenna each posted 42 to lead them.
A rematch between Cazenovia and Chittenango is set for Thursday at Rogues Roost after the Lakers take on LaFayette the day before.
