More than four months after finishing their regular season, a quartet of area gymnasts would help propel Section III to the top spot in Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.
In all, 13 gymnasts represented Section III in the state meet, which took place at Cold Spring Harbor High School on Long Island. With their team score of 184.825, the section beat out Section VI (184.200) for team honors.
Jamesville-DeWitt/Fayetteville-Manlius featured Rylee Fishkin, who rose near the top of the standings in uneven bars. Fishkin’s 9.350 routine put her in a tie for seventh place with Section I’s Samantha Greenhut.
Fishkin also tied for 19th on floor exercise with a 9.050 as one of her J-D/F-M teammates, Rachel McKean, finished 50th with 8.275. On the vault, Fishkin finished 33rd with 8.875.
Meanwhile, East Syracuse Minoa/Liverpool gymnast Delia Korseniewski tied Section XI’s Haylie Kelly for 11th place on the floor thanks to a 9.225 routine, to go with her 8.475 on balance beam that put her in 40th place.
This group, along with J-D/F-M’s Zoe Potamianos, were part of a Section III side led by New Hartford’s Miranda Smith, who won the state all-around title with a score of 38.675, exactly 1.5 points ahead of the runner-up, Section VI’s Jenna Blair.
Smith was victorious on the uneven bars (9.775), beam and floor, where she scored a pair of 9.6 routines, and was second on the vault with 9.700 behind Section XI’s Skye Harper’s own 9.775.
The state championship team from Section III had Fishkin, McKean, Korseniewski, Potamianos, Smith, New Hartford’s Sienna Zuccaro, Madelyn Massoud and Kennedy Massoud, Whitesboro’s Taylor Bushey, Kiara Khiamdavanh and Madison Scialdone, Baldwinsville’s Maddie Brooks and Central Square’s Peter Ferrante.
