Fresh off a second-place finish in the Onondaga High School League, the Solvay boys bowling team would aim for even more during Sunday’s Section III champioships at Utica’s Pin-O-Rama.
But when the final scores were tallied, the Bearcats had finished seventh in Class B and 10th in the Division II (small school) portion with a total pinfall of 5,046, well off the winning total of 6,147 from Vernon-Verona-Sherrill.
Solvay did best in the opening game with a total of 1,002, but followed with games of 826 and 891 in the morning session, plus afternoon scores of 805, 846 and 676.
Individually, Ethan Bigelow led the Bearcats with a total of 1,074 that included games of 221 and 202. Carter Lee opened with a 213, his best game during his 1,072 set.
Alex Gallardo had a 992 series. Ed Matysuk shot a 216 opener and put up 867 over five games, with Russ Tarbell posting 779 over his five games.
Before all this, Solvay achieved plenty of success in both the boys and girls divisions during last Wednesday’s OHSL tournament at Strike-N-Spare.
On the girls side, Caitlin McCann and Abigail Lee won the doubles title with their score of 859, just ahead of the 825 from Chittenango’s Abbie Austin and Keelin Davie.
Meanwhile, the boys were second and third in doubles. Bigelow and Gallardo shot 1,126, while Tarbell and Lee had 1,035, the two of them trailing the 1,167 from Homer’s Mike Grant and Rich Lambrecht.
