Leaving all of its challengers far behind them, the Cazenovia boys indoor track and field team used its all-around strength to win Wednesday night’s Onondaga High School League Division I championship at SRC Arena.
Ultimately, the Lakers picked up 131 points, well clear of runner-up Skaneateles, who had 80 points, helped in no small part by a series of victories in field events.
Going 1-2 in the high jump, Cazenovia had Dalton Sevier prevail by clearing 6 feet 2 inches, with Dylan Anderson topping 5’8″ for second place. Sevier went to the pole vault and topped 11’6″ to win again, while Elijah Clement was third with 8’6″.
Moving to the shot put, Gordan Wester had the top toss of 41’3 1/2″ as no one else could top the 40-foot mark. Also, Wester was fifth in the shot put, heaving it 37 feet.
Slater DeLeon also got second place in the long jump, going 19’4″ as Dylan Albicker finished seventh, but improved to third in the triple jump with 37’2 3/4″ as Dylan Anderson was fourth with 37’1″.
Cazenovia only won one race – the last one on the track, the 4×200 relay. There, DeLeon, Staples, Charles Kubniec and Andrew Lee went one minute, 35.29 seconds, pulling away from Syracuse Institute of Technology Central 1:39.04) and the field.
Joe Spires, in 6.74 seconds, got second in the 55-meter dash behind ITC’s Shameik Williams (6.53), while Slater DeLeon was fourth in 6.89 seconds. Jared Smith went 2:55.67 to claim second place at 1,000 meters, with Cassidy Gilmore fourth in 2:58.87.
Andrew Kent, in 1:27.60, was just behind Westhill’s Mike Ferrara (1:27.41) in the 600-meter run, with Dan Millson eighth, while in the 55-meter hurdles Connor Wilson was second in 8.52 seconds to ITC’s Carlos Diaz (8.32) and Jason Olkowski was fourth in exactly nine seconds to go with his seventh in the weight throw.
Mike Senehi got to fourth place in the 1,600-meter run in 4:52.38. Eric Groff, eighth in the 1,600, was fifth (11:05.25) and Stanley Angus was sixth (11:38.24) in the 3,200-meter run. Cormac Race was seventh and Alex Lansing eighth in the 300-meter dash.
Chittenango picked up 30 points to claim seventh place, but that included a 4×400 relay where the Bears’ Kenny Mathews, Warren Tedford, Tristam LaFountaine and Parker Tedford went 3:44.79, just ahead of Cazenovia as Kent, Race, Lansing and Dylan Albicker posted 3:47.88 for second place.
Nate Vivelo finished third in the shot put with a throw of 38’7 1/4″. LaFountaine also got sixth place in the 600 in 1:33.67 as the Bears were third in the 4×200 in 1:40.68 and fourth in the 4×800 in 10:24.60.
The Chittenango girls indoor track team had 27 points, putting them sixth, though well off Westhill’s winning total of 117 points as the Bears’ McKayla Capeling, Piper Beckwith, Kiara Waite and Lauren Suppe went 10:41.03 in the 4×800 to beat Westhill’s 10:44.87 for the top spot.
Suppe gained second place in the 1,500-meter run in 5:13.80, with Capeling sixth in 5:38.16. Beckwith got fourth place in the 1,000-meter run in 3:31.63, while Lailah Emad was fifth in the 3,000-meter run in 12:12.35 and Waite was sixth in the 600 in 1:50.34. Tamia Williams had a sixth-place triple jump of 31’1 1/2″.
All of these teams return to SRC Arena on Feb. 8 for the Section III Class B championship meet.
