Showing its best form of the season so far, the Skaneateles faced off with Solvay last Tuesday night, and though the Bearcats had the better record (7-3) going into the game, it was the 3-7 Lakers dominating the second half and winning by a score of 63-33.
Neither side could get away early, but Skaneateles, in front 21-20 at the break, did everything right in the last two quarters, putting in a series of baskets while maintaining a stout defense.
Leading that late charge, Maddy Ramsgard had 20 points, with Kate Aberi earning 12 points. Maeve Canty and Tatumn Pas’cal had eight points apiece as Mia Bigham had six points.
On Solvay’s side, Tazz Pitts did all she could, with 17 points and five rebounds, but no one else had more than Olivia Petralito’s total of six points. Haley Muehl and Ryleigh Bidwell each had eight rebounds.
This followed a 43-22 win over Mexico on Jan. 10 where Skaneateles saw Maeve Canty pick up 14 points, with Tatumn Pas’cal adding nine points and Maddy Ramsgard earning six points.
And it preceded another big test on Friday that the Lakers faced against Christian Brothers Academy, who entered the night 10-1 and no. 18 in the state Class A rankings, its lone defeat coming to Bishop Grimes earlier in the week.
Here, Skaneateles saw its brief win streak halted in a 64-50 defeat to the Brothers, who leaned on Emily Hall getting a career-high 29 points with help from Brooke Jarvis and Maura Clare Conan, who had 14 points apiece.
No one on the Lakers got close to Hall’s numbers, even though Pas’cal and Canty both had their 14-point efforts and Ramsgard added 10 points. Aberi finished with six points.
Jordan-Elbridge lost last Tuesday to Mexico 39-26, with a 12-3 run by the Tigers in the third quarter accounting for most of the margin. Mollie Yard had 10 points for the Eagles as Ashlee Eaton added seven points.
On Thursday, Solvay fell to Hannibal 43-25, held to seven points in the first half and unable to recover from that early slump, though Pitts had 12 points and six rebounds, Bidwell adding nine rebounds.
