What seems guaranteed is that, whenever the Cicero-North Syracuse girls volleyball team meets up with Fayetteville-Manlius, it’s bound to be a great one.
They played five sets on Sept. 11 and the Northstars prevailed, and when they met again last Monday night it again went the full length, only this time it was the Hornets finishing on top.
All kinds of top performances were put together on both sides, with C-NS seeing Aurora Lesinski put away a season-best 20 kills as Brooke Segars, along with her 12 kills, got 17 digs and three aces. Adrianna Houston added nine kills.
Jennifer Carl earned 37 assists, adding seven aces, seven digs and three kills, with Brooke Nicolaos getting nine kills, five kills, two aces and three assists. Cassidy Ormond had 14 assists, joining Segars, McKenna Johnston and Hannah Mingle in notching three aces.
For F-M’s part, Morgan Napier earned 34 assists and 18 digs, while Nina Avery notched 36 digs. Juliana Myagkota added 20 digs as Harper Stoppacher had 15 kills and 14 digs, with Kendra Broddus notching 11 kills and 13 digs. Anna Williams had eight kills and Maura Helmer had five kills and four blocks as Sophie Thomas contributed three aces.
So began, for C-NS, a stretch of four matches in five days, ending Friday with a battle against rival Liverpool. But the Northstars won all of them and, at the end of this, swept the Warriors 25-14, 25-18, 25-18.
Lesinski’s 11 kills keyed the effort against Liverpool as Segars added six kills, Johnston five kills and Nicolaos four kills. On the back line, Carl amassed 20 assists, four aces, three kills, two blocks and eight digs, Mingle finishing with 18 digs.
In defeat, Liverpool had Lexi Carfi and Kaylah Yarn each finish with four kills, while Carfi earned six assists and Veronica DeTota picked up five assists.
Right after the F- M match, C-NS had to play again 24 hours later against visiting Oswego, but managed to beat the Buccaneers 25-16, 25-15, 25-9.
Carl produced 13 assists, three aces and four kills, with Ormond getting 15 assists. Johnston had seven kills to pace a balanced front line as Nicolaos had six kills, with Segars and Lesinski getting five kills apiece, Houston four kills and Mingle earning nine digs.
The Northstars swept Henninger 25-6, 25-5, 25-10 on Thursday night, the totals including eight aces from Madison Roche and seven aces from Ormond to go with her 15 assists. Carl had 11 assists and 11 digs as Nicolaos and Madeline Howell had five kills apiece, Howell adding four aces and Segars and Emma Koenig both earning four kills.
Before it faced C-NS, Liverpool returned to action last Tuesday and looked for a regular-season sweep of West Genesee, but instead got swept as, with an impressive all-around effort, the Wildcats beating the Warriors 25-22, 25-13, 25-16.
Though Carfi finished with 12 assists, no Liverpool player had more than the three kills put up by Abby Rowell and Sarah Ayling. On WG’s side, Anna Snyder, with 27 assists, and Mackenzie Winn, with eight digs, led the way as Phoebe Anderson earned seven kills.
It turned around on Thursday night, Liverpool handling Corcoran 25-14, 25-9, 25-18. Carfi finished with five kills and three assists, while Yarn had four aces and Emma Terzini got three aces. DeTota had three assists.
Liverpool’s lone match this week is at Henninger on Thursday. C-NS, meanwhile, goes to Nottingham that same Thursday and has a tournament in Horseheads on Saturday.
