At the culmination of an undefeated September, the Westhill girls volleyball team went to last Saturday’s Baldwinsville Fall Swing Tournament.
Struggles in the group portion meant that the Warriors went to the Bronze Division, but it recovered to win there, defeating Jamesville-DeWitt in three sets in the championship round.
The week started for Westhill with a trip to Mexico and a 25-7, 25-19, 25-21 sweep of the Tigers. Sarah Schwartz, with 27 assists, and Gianna Militi, with 13 digs, benefited a Warriors front line where Kate Hinrich and Grace O’Connell each had six kills, with Morgan Richardson adding five kills.
Thursday’s match between Westhill and its neighbors from Solvay didn’t last long, either, as the Warriors put together a 25-18, 25-15, 25-21 win over the Bearcats.
Heinrich dominated at the net with 22 kills, with Sara Galante getting seven kills and eight digs. Schwartz had 20 assists and Militi earned 12 digs as, for Solvay, Myah Platler earned nine kills and Sophia Guadagnolo added 17 assists.
Skaneateles took on Bishop Ludden last Tuesday night, and after it survived a tight 25-23 first set, the Lakers handled the Gaelic Knights by more comfortable margins of 25-18 and 25-14 in the next two sets.
Maeve Canty had seven aces to go with nine kills and nine digs. Lily Delasin earned 15 assists and six digs, with Emma Keady getting seven kills and Emma Miller earning seven digs, plus six aces. Rory Comer got fiv assists and four digs.
Then the old rivalry between Skaneateles and Solvay revived itself Wednesday night, but it was all Lakers as it put together a 25-14, 25-20, 25-21 sweep of the Bearcats.
Canty had 16 kills, three aces and 13 digs this time around, Delasin getting 18 assists and seven digs. Miller had 11 digs as, for Solvay, Guadagnolo had 14 assists, Jordan Bamba got 11 digs and Anastasia LaFlair earned six kills.
A 3-0 week for the Lakers concluded Friday with a 25-13, 25-13, 27-25 win over Hannibal, with Delasin getting 19 assists and six digs as Canty earned 14 kills, four aces and nine digs.
Keady amassed 11 assists, three aces and seven digs for Skaneateles (10-1) as Grace Congel had five kills and eight digs, while Reagan Evans four kills. Miller got 10 digs and five aces.
Ludden met Living Word Academy on Thursday night, the key to the match a 30-28 marathon the Gaelic Knights took in the opening set as it won the second 25-21, lost the third 25-22 but closed out the Lions 25-20 in the fourth.
On a balanced Ludden front line, Megan Virkler put up 12 kills, while Jayden Burney had 11 kills and Jasmine Cuffee got nine kills. Kate Ruddy produced 27 assists and six aces.
Marcellus had a tournament of its own on Sept. 21, but could not claim the title as Liverpool repeated, defeating Jamesville-DeWitt in the championship round. But the Mustangs would beat the Warriors in the Baldwinsville Fall Swing Tournament, finishing second in the Diamond bracket to Windsor.
Facing Homer last Tuesday, Marcellus won 25-19, 25-23, 25-22 over the Trojans as Bronte Stahl had eight assists and Jenna Mattison added seven assists.
Up front, Elaine Grattan led with five kills, just ahead of the four kills from Brook Finnarty and three kills from Anna Fern. Defensively, Evelyn Webster led the way with nine digs and Grattan contributed eight digs.
As a follow-up on Thursday, Marcellus swept Institute of Technology Central 25-19, 25-7, 25-18. Stahl had six aces and five assists, while Mattison had four assists. Finarty had three kills and Webster added eight digs.
West Genesee got a 25-9, 25-14, 25-4 sweep of Corcoran last Monday as Anna Snyder earned 13 assists and Isabella Allen pounded seven aces. Margaret Clancy added five aces as Brynn Zajac had five kills, Allen and Julia Quirk each earning three kills.
Another sweep followed on Wednesday against Henninger, the Wildcats taking it 25-15, 25-9, 25-22. Quirk and Mia Lamanna each had five kills, with Allen, Phoebe Anderson and Cameron Rosenthal each adding four kills in front of Snyder, who got 18 assists.
Jordan-Elbridge gained a 25-18, 25-15, 25-13 win over Southern Cayuga last Monday night, with Sarah Lane earning 17 assists as Ashlee Eaton and Ranait McGuire each got eight kills. Gabby Smart added four kills.
Against Hamilton a night later, the Eagles claimed another three-set decision, winning 25-19, 25-12, 25-16. McGuire earned five kills and three aces, with Eaton adding three kills as Sarah Lane had 11 assists and four digs. Smart and Paige Lane also had three aces.
Then J-E faced Homer on Thursday and was swept by the Trojans 25-10, 25-16, 25-16. Eaton, with 12 digs, and Elizabeth Bartoszewski, with nine digs, paced the Eagles’ defense as Sarah Lane had five assists.
