A year ago, boys golf teams at West Genesee and Westhill swept to Section III fall tournament championships.
Whether they would do so again would get determined in the first two days of October, with the small-school sectional tournament set for Tuesday at Rogues Roost and the Class AA and A teams gathering Wednesday at Radisson.
Westhill got its last week of the regular season going with a tough 217-224 win over the Homer Trojans last Tuesday in windy conditions at Camillus Hills.
Anthony Maglisco’s 39 was one behind the 38 by Homer’s Mitch Riter. It took 43s by Luke Gilmartin and Michael Britt to edge the Warriors in front as only one Trojan golfer (Cooper Withey) matched it, with Aidan Ryan getting a 44 and Devin Young adding a 48.
A day later, getting a sneak peak at the Rogues Roost course where it would play the sectional tournament, Westhill pulled away from Chittenango, prevailing 214-251 over the Bears.
Maglisco’s 38 beat out Chittenango’s Tyrus Kelly (40) for individual honors, and no other Bears golfer broke 50. Gilmartin finished with a 41 and Britt added a 44.
Back on Tuesday, , Skaneateles gained a big victory of its own, claiming a 218-224 battle with Christian Brothers Academy in the first of three home matches in four days at Skaneateles Country Club.
Tynan Jones shot 38, six strokes better than the low CBA round of 44 by Joe Nicholson. The rest proved even as Shawn Luce shot 43, Drew Henderson got a 44 and Tyson DiRubbo added a 45, with Will Cowden clinching it by shooting a 48.
A 222-265 victory over LaFayette followed a day later. Jones had a 38, with DiRubbo improving to a 42 as Luce and Henderson remained steady, each posting 45. Then Skaneateles won 221-228 over Cazenovia on Friday afternoon.
West Genesee hosted Cicero-North Syracuse Blue at Westvale last Thursday afternoon, and lost a close 195-198 decision to the Northstars. Connor Christie shot a 41 for the Wildcats, while Ryan McLane got a 42, Jake Weaver earned a 43 and Dylan Pettinelli finished with a 46.
Then the Wildcats ventured to Woodcrest on Friday, where it posted a fine team score of 198 – yet was far behind Fayetteville-Manlius Green, whose 176 clinched for the Hornets the SCAC Metro division regular-season title.
That 176 also set a team record as seven different F-M Green golfers broke 40, led by Enzo Abruzzese, who posted a 33 as Adam Butch added a 34 and Mike Millimaci shot a 35.
