Though challenged on a regular basis, girls tennis teams from Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy remain atop their respective leagues.
J-D, in first place in the SCAC Empire division, returned to action last Monday and turned back Central Square 6-1.
The Red Rams’ doubles teams of Mona Farah-Tara Pollock, Riya Sharma-Lana Wisniewski, Elina Park-Serena Patel and Courtney Keough-Sabina Muradova all rolled to straight-set wins.
Inika Gajra lost her first singles match to the Redhawks’ Charlotte VonToledo, but Celia Reid rallied past Lauren Forland 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 as Sydney Cline worked past Claudia Boyko 7-5, 6-4.
A 6-1 victory over followed on Wednesday afternoon, Gajra blanking Pearl Hettich 6-0, 6-0 as Reid won 6-3, 6-1 over Emma Hutchings and Cline won over Arianna DeFranco 6-4, 6-3.
Twice, the Purple Tigers pushed doubles matches to three sets, and split them. Patel and Libby Blair overcame a bad second set to beat Oumou Diakite and Julia Guest 6-3, 0-6, 6-1, while Keough and Muradova lost, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, to Lelyzaveta Antonova and Ellen Conlon.
And this led to Friday’s match against a much-improved East Syracuse Minoa, but J-D still had the upper hand in this neighborhood rivalry, turning back the Spartans 5-2.
During a singles sweep, Farah routed Julia Barnwell 6-1, 6-0, with Reid handling Lizzy Phillips 6-2. 6-2. Cline prevailed 6-3, 6-1 over Jessica Vollmer.
ESM did get points from doubles, where Marissa Drogo and Lauren Postma worked past Mudarova and Teresa Greenwood 6-3, 6-3 as Victoria Bondarenko and Jade Burgen had a 7-5, 1-6, 12-10 win over Park and Patel.
J-D countered in the other doubles matches, though, as Wisniewski and Blair got past Sammy Baadani and Alana Day 6-1, 6-4, while Gajra and Sharma worked together to beat Katie Schmidt and Megan Volz 6-3, 6-0.
CBA, parked atop the OHSL Liberty division, handled Westhill 7-0 last Monday as Gieselle Vlassis, Grace DelPino and Julia DelPino lost just one game in six sets of singles play. The closest doubles match had Grace Catalano and Maddie Tallman handle Sophie Langdon and Grace Lesselroth 6-4, 6-3.
It got tougher a day later when the Brothers faced Skaneateles, with the Lakers picking off points in singles and doubles, but the Brothers still able to claim a 5-2 decision.
Vlassis blasted Kenna Ellis 6-0, 6-0 as Julia DelPino handled Isabella Kroon 6-1, 6-0. But the Lakers got on the board by having Lily Miller beat Allie Mancini 6-2, 6-0.
Similarly, in doubles Catalano and Grace DelPino could not hold on to an early lead in a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 defeat to Ella Danforth and Emma Miller.
But Tallman and Lily Geneocco won their own three-set battle over Sofia Capozza and Sophia Soderberg 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, and in yet another three-set match Sophie Schultz and Schutie Zirath outlasted Rachel Hackler and Kelsey Rutledge 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.
